Neither XRP nor stablecoins are automatically cheaper or faster for an international payment. XRP is a market-priced asset that can bridge between currencies; a stablecoin aims to track a reference currency, often the U.S. dollar. The best choice depends on the whole route: how the sender funds it, where conversion happens, what the recipient can receive, and the fees and timing of the payout—not just the blockchain transaction.
For a fair comparison, separate the on-ledger transfer from the end-to-end payment. A crypto transfer between wallets is not the same service as a provider collecting money in one currency and delivering local currency to a bank account.
What differs between XRP and a stablecoin?
XRP is the XRP Ledger’s native digital asset. Its price is set by the open market, and it can serve as a bridge asset when a payment needs to move between currencies or tokens. It is not a claim on a dollar reserve.

That can reduce price movement during the time the asset is held for transfer, but it does not make the token identical to dollars in a bank account. Issuer arrangements, reserve backing, redemption terms, supported networks, and access in each jurisdiction all matter.

Ripple describes RLUSD as a U.S. dollar-backed token supported one-to-one by cash deposits, U.S. Treasuries, and cash equivalents, and says it has regulatory oversight and is integrated into Ripple Payments in certain jurisdictions. Those are issuer statements; they do not establish that every user can redeem RLUSD directly at par or use it in every location. For any stablecoin, check the issuer’s terms and reserve reporting.
What does a cross-border payment actually cost?
Compare the amount the recipient receives after every charge, not just the fee displayed by a ledger or wallet. The all-in cost can include sender funding, asset acquisition, currency conversion, spread, liquidity, provider service charges, network fees, withdrawal, and local payout.
XRP route costs
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) charges a small transaction cost in XRP, which is destroyed. XRPL documentation lists 10 drops as the minimum reference transaction cost before load-based scaling; the required cost can rise with network load. That is a protocol-level figure, not the total cost of sending money, and its fiat value changes with XRP’s market price.

A sender or provider may also pay to acquire XRP, trade it for another asset, access liquidity, or pay for a recipient’s local payout. Even with a low ledger fee, spreads and service charges can determine the final cost.
Stablecoin route costs
A stablecoin transfer can involve network fees, exchange or wallet charges, acquisition and sale spreads, liquidity costs, and on- and off-ramp fees. The token’s target price does not eliminate the cost of converting the sender’s currency into the stablecoin or converting it into the recipient’s currency.
The Bank for International Settlements Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (BIS CPMI) notes that a common platform may reduce intermediaries, while smaller stablecoin ecosystems or routes requiring more conversions may increase reliance on conversion services. Its October 2023 report also identifies FX risk, KYC/AML, on- and off-ramp infrastructure, validator fees, and data-localisation requirements as relevant costs or constraints. These are possible route factors, not evidence that stablecoins are always cheaper.

There is no universal fee winner. The result depends on the corridor, transfer amount and direction, available markets, supported assets and networks, and payout method. Without a specific route and executable quotes, a categorical price ranking would be misleading.

Are stablecoin payments faster than XRP?
Not necessarily. XRPL documentation describes ledger settlement in 3–5 seconds and says its cross-currency payments complete atomically: either the payment executes fully or none of it does. These describe ledger-level behavior, not the time for a person’s entire bank-to-bank transfer.
A payment can take longer while the sender’s funds arrive, identity or compliance checks are completed, a provider processes the transaction, a conversion is made, or a local payout is delivered. Stablecoin confirmation time also depends on the supported network and the service handling the transfer; the evidence here does not establish a comparable, general stablecoin end-to-end time.

For context, the BIS CPMI’s October 2023 report gives a range of less than five minutes to more than two days for correspondent-bank cross-border settlement across routes. That is a route-dependent banking-system range, not a direct, like-for-like benchmark against a particular XRP or stablecoin payment product. Ripple’s business product page describes payouts in minutes, but that is vendor language, not a universal service-level guarantee.
How conversion and liquidity affect the route
For an XRPL cross-currency payment, there must be at least one viable path with enough liquidity. XRPL can automatically route a conversion through XRP when that path lowers cost; larger conversions can combine direct and XRP-bridged paths. This is a protocol capability, not a guarantee that a particular currency pair has deep liquidity or that a user will receive a favorable execution price.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA dollar stablecoin may avoid holding a volatile bridge asset during the transfer if both sides can use it. But if the sender starts with a different currency and the recipient needs another local currency, conversions and their spreads remain on both ends. Whether the stablecoin is available in the right currency, on a network both parties support, and in the relevant jurisdictions is part of the comparison.

Compare the payment route, not just the asset
| What to compare | XRP route | Stablecoin route |
|---|---|---|
| Asset exposure | Market-price movement while XRP is held between conversion points. | Target-currency stability alongside issuer, reserve, and redemption exposure. |
| Network leg | XRPL transaction cost and ledger settlement; the fee can scale with network load. | Supported network, its fee, confirmation or finality model, and congestion behavior; these depend on the selected chain. |
| Funding and conversion | Sender funding method, XRP acquisition, available conversion paths and liquidity, and any sale spread. | Sender funding method, stablecoin availability, conversions into and out of the token, and the associated spreads. |
| End-to-end cost | Compare provider, network, conversion, withdrawal, and local payout charges, then record recipient net proceeds. | Compare provider, network, on/off-ramp, conversion, withdrawal, and local payout charges, then record recipient net proceeds. |
| Delivery | XRPL documents 3–5 second ledger settlement; end-to-end arrival depends on the rest of the route. | Network confirmation and end-to-end arrival depend on the chosen network, provider, and payout route; no general time is established here. |
| Access and compliance | Verify sender and recipient eligibility, provider coverage, applicable rules, and required identity or compliance checks. | Also verify issuer, token and network support, redemption eligibility, local rules, and required identity or compliance checks. |
| Operational dependence | Consider conversion venues, the payment provider, and payout access, as well as network availability. | Consider issuer, custodian, redemption access, conversion venues, provider, payout access, and network availability. |
How to compare actual offers
- Fix the scenario. Use the same origin, destination, send amount, delivery currency, payment method, and time window for each option.
- Identify what actually moves value. Ask whether the service uses XRP, a named stablecoin, or fiat for each leg. A provider using Ripple Payments is not necessarily sending XRP.
- Collect executable quotes close together in time. Record the quoted exchange rate or spread, every listed fee, the quote’s expiry, and the amount the recipient is expected to receive.
- Separate network confirmation from delivery. Record the estimated ledger or network time separately from the provider’s end-to-end arrival estimate, including what might delay payout.
- Check access and recovery terms. Confirm both parties can use the asset, network, provider, and payout method, and understand what happens if a transfer is delayed or redemption is unavailable.
The recipient’s net amount and a realistic arrival estimate are the useful comparison points. A cheaper-looking network fee does not establish that the complete payment is cheaper.
When might each route make sense?
XRP as a bridge asset
XRP may be useful where a payment service can access suitable XRP liquidity and use it to bridge between the relevant assets. Its market price creates exposure while the asset is held, and the route’s actual execution depends on available liquidity and provider costs.
A stablecoin as a transfer asset
A stablecoin may be useful when both ends can access the same token and network and the sender values a transfer asset designed to track a reference currency. Its suitability still depends on conversions, issuer and redemption arrangements, jurisdiction, and reliable payout access.

A managed payment service
Managed services can combine fiat collection, holding, exchange, and payouts, and may use different assets—or settle in fiat—depending on product and corridor. Ripple Payments describes such a business service, with availability varying by product and Ripple entity. Ask which asset actually moves value on each leg and which entity handles conversion and payout; the provider’s brand alone does not answer that.
