XREAL AURA and Meta VR Glasses share a lightweight glasses-and-compute-puck design and land near the same price at their entry points. Their biggest difference is how you see your surroundings: AURA uses optical see-through lenses, while Meta shows a camera passthrough view. That distinction affects how directly the physical world remains visible, but it does not establish that either device is safe to wear while walking. Both products are announced or reservation-stage rather than independently reviewed final retail hardware as of October 7, 2026.

How do XREAL AURA and Meta VR Glasses compare?

The two products move computing hardware off the face and into a separate puck, leaving a glasses unit that each company says weighs about 100 grams or less. They differ most in their view of the physical world, software positioning, and announced availability. Prices are close only if you compare Meta’s announced US price with AURA’s lower configuration.

Feature XREAL AURA Meta VR Glasses
View of surroundings Optical see-through; the wearer sees the physical world directly through the lenses, according to XREAL. Full-color camera passthrough, according to Meta.
Platform Android XR with Gemini. Meta OS and Meta AI, with a VR-focused content and workspace platform.
Compute design Snapdragon Reality Elite compute puck, with an XREAL X1S coprocessor in the glasses. Snapdragon Reality Elite puck; Meta says it holds compute, battery, and storage and connects to the glasses by an optical tether.
Glasses weight 95g, per XREAL’s product specifications; puck weight is not included. About 100g, per Meta’s 2026 announcement; puck weight is not included.
Announced or listed price $1,279 for 12GB memory/256GB storage, or $1,499 for 16GB/512GB, on XREAL’s current product page. $1,299.99 in the US, announced by Meta.
Availability status XREAL’s page presents configurations and reservation options; it does not establish a confirmed shipping date here. Meta announced sale timing for Spring 2027.
Inputs and tracking XREAL lists world-facing sensors, hand tracking, and 6DoF. Tom’s Guide reported occasional lagging or missed pinches in a pre-release demo. Meta lists eye tracking, hand gestures, and voice input. Tom’s Guide reported that eye and hand tracking worked well in its demo.

The specifications and current reservation status for XREAL AURA are listed by XREAL; Meta’s price, weight, and timing come from its product announcement. The tracking comments are one reviewer’s pre-release impressions, not a controlled comparison or final-device test.

What does optical see-through mean for walking?

AURA: the surroundings remain a direct view

With optical see-through, the lenses let the wearer look at the real environment directly rather than viewing it as a camera image on a display. XREAL says this avoids camera-passthrough delay. That is a meaningful difference for awareness, especially compared with looking at a rendered camera feed.

Meta: the surroundings are shown through cameras

Meta describes its system as full-color camera passthrough: cameras capture the environment and display that view to the wearer. It is not the same as looking through clear lenses at the room itself.

Direct visibility should not be read as a safety endorsement. Neither cited product information establishes that AURA or Meta VR Glasses is safe for walking, crossing streets, or other activities that demand attention. Optical see-through changes the way the surroundings are presented; it does not remove ordinary hazards or distraction.

How similar are their pucks and weight?

Both designs put substantial computing components in a separate puck connected to the glasses, reducing the weight carried on the face while adding a tether and a separate device to manage. The published weights—95g for AURA and about 100g for Meta—refer to the glasses, not the complete glasses-and-puck setup.

XREAL specifies a Snapdragon Reality Elite puck and an X1S coprocessor inside AURA’s glasses. Meta says its puck contains compute, battery, and storage and connects by optical tether. Meta claims up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback for the puck; that is a vendor claim, not an independent battery test.

Which software and controls are announced?

XREAL AURA

XREAL positions AURA on Android XR with Gemini. Its product information lists world-facing sensors, hand tracking, and 6DoF. Google’s Android XR announcement from AWE 2026 provides platform context, but the available information does not establish long-term app quality or the finished experience across software updates.

Meta VR Glasses

Meta describes Meta OS and Meta AI alongside a VR-oriented content and workspace platform. The input methods it lists include eye tracking, hand gestures, and voice. These are announced capabilities, not evidence of how well every app or control will work in final retail units.

In a pre-release comparison, Tom’s Guide said Meta’s eye and hand tracking worked well in its demo, while AURA pinches sometimes lagged or failed to register. Treat that as a limited hands-on impression rather than a settled performance ranking. See Tom’s Guide’s comparison.

Are they really the same price, and when can you buy them?

They are in a similar premium price band, but not at every configuration: Meta announced a US price of $1,299.99, close to AURA’s currently listed $1,279 entry configuration. AURA’s listed 16GB/512GB option is $1,499. XREAL’s page currently shows reservations, so those listed prices and the eventual shipping status should not be treated as proof that retail units have shipped. Meta announced Spring 2027 sales; that is a future announced window, not current availability.

XREAL’s June 2026 launch announcement described a fall 2026 launch and a maximum base price of $1,500, while its current page lists two configurations and reservation options. For present pricing and status, use the current XREAL product page; the earlier announcement is available through XREAL via PR Newswire. Meta’s announcement gives its price and Spring 2027 timing.

Which one is the better fit?

  • Consider AURA if direct optical visibility is your priority. Its design keeps the physical scene directly visible, though that alone does not make it suitable for walking or guarantee safety.
  • Consider Meta’s approach if you want a camera-passthrough view and Meta’s announced software ecosystem. Its stated sale window is Spring 2027, so it is not presented as a currently shipping alternative.
  • Compare the full configuration and carrying setup, not just the headline weight or price. The glasses figures omit the puck, and AURA’s higher-memory configuration is $1,499 on the current product page.
  • Wait for final hardware and software details if tracking reliability or battery life is decisive. Current impressions are from a pre-release demo, and the battery figure is Meta’s own claim.

What is and is not established by the hands-on reports?

Tom’s Guide reports impressions from a pre-release comparison demo; Axios also published a hands-on report and quoted Meta VP of Product Angela Chang saying, “It’s not built for any specific use case per se.” That is Chang’s characterization reported by Axios on September 23, 2026, not a substitute for a final-device review. Neither report establishes long-term comfort, final software performance, or a safety case for walking.

Prescription correction is another practical consideration: XREAL lists prescription inserts for AURA, and Axios reported magnetic prescription inserts on the Meta prototype. That does not establish third-party compatibility or identify a confirmed supplier for either product.
