Xona’s Pulsar is not yet a broadly available GPS replacement. On October 7, 2026, the company said six production satellites were preparing to launch that month, marking the start of deployment for its commercial satellite-navigation service. That was a schedule update—not confirmation that the satellites had launched. Xona says Pulsar-0 signals are currently being received and tested in parts of the United States and Canada, while full constellation rollout is planned over the next few years.

What is Xona Pulsar?

Pulsar is a commercial low Earth orbit (LEO) positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) system being developed by Xona Space Systems. It is designed to broadcast an independent navigation signal alongside established global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), including GPS. The intended role is to provide another source for positioning and timing—not to replace GPS or make existing phones and navigation devices automatically compatible.

Conventional GNSS constellations such as GPS operate in medium Earth orbit. Pulsar’s lower-orbit design and signal are intended to complement existing GNSS, but the service is still in deployment and its practical performance will depend on coverage, compatible equipment, and integration.

When will Pulsar be available?

Xona’s latest deployment announcements describe a service beginning deployment, not a completed global launch. These milestones distinguish regulatory authorization, manufacturing progress, and current signal testing from commercial availability.

Date What Xona or its partners reported What it means
August 3, 2026 Xona said the FCC authorized Pulsar broadcasting from its planned constellation of more than 250 satellites. Xona’s FCC announcement A major regulatory milestone for the planned constellation; it does not establish current global coverage.
October 7, 2026 Xona said six production satellites were preparing for an October launch and called their launch the beginning of commercial-service deployment. The next four spacecraft were entering production at its Burlingame factory, and the company said manufacturing capacity would continue scaling through 2027. Xona’s production update A company schedule update, published before the launch window; it is not confirmation that the satellites have launched.
Current status described on Xona’s product page Xona says Pulsar-0 signals are being received and tested across regions of the United States and Canada, with full service rollout planned over the next few years. Xona’s Pulsar page Limited regional testing, not a claim of broadly available commercial or global coverage.

The practical takeaway is to treat Pulsar as an emerging service. The October launch plan is an important step, but the announcements do not establish when a typical user will be able to buy service, where coverage will be available, or what commercial terms will apply.

What performance does Xona claim?

Xona’s current product specifications list dual-band Pulsar X1 and X5 signals, positioning accuracy of 2 cm horizontal and 4 cm vertical, timing below 10 ns, and signal power up to -136 dBW. Xona describes that signal power as 100 times GPS L1 C/A. These are company-published specifications, not independently verified results across typical users, locations, receivers, or operating conditions. Xona’s Pulsar specifications

Those figures should not be read as a guarantee that any compatible receiver will deliver centimeter-level positioning. Real-world results depend on factors such as receiver design, signal availability, installation, and the service and correction data available to the user. The available evidence does not provide an independent, broad performance comparison against GPS.

Will an existing GPS or GNSS receiver work with Pulsar?

Not necessarily. Xona says Pulsar is designed for GNSS receiver hardware using L1 or L5, but support is model- and firmware-specific. A receiver that supports an L1 or L5 band is not automatically confirmed to receive or use Pulsar.

There is evidence of practical integration work. In June 2026, receiver manufacturer Furuno reported receiving live Pulsar-0 signals in Nishinomiya, Japan, using commercial GNSS equipment with limited firmware modifications. Xona’s July 2026 Pulsar Verified program named Trimble, Septentrio, STMicroelectronics, Safran, StarNav, and Keysight in its initial group of receiver makers, chipset integrators, device manufacturers, and test-equipment developers. The program is intended to verify that participating hardware can receive and operate with Pulsar; membership alone does not confirm that every product from those companies is compatible. Other partnerships point to future professional workflows rather than universal consumer-device support. Topcon announced a commercial early-access agreement with Xona in February 2026 to prepare Pulsar integration in future high-precision positioning workflows. In March 2025, Trimble and Xona announced work to integrate Trimble correction services with Pulsar; their announcement expected initial launches in late 2026 and service starting in 2027. That was the partners’ published expectation at the time, not an updated guarantee. Topcon’s early-access announcement Trimble and Xona’s collaboration announcement

If you are evaluating equipment, an L1/L5 GNSS receiver is a technical category to investigate—not a compatibility guarantee. Confirm Pulsar support, required firmware, coverage, and service requirements with the receiver maker. No specific retail receiver model is established as Pulsar-compatible by the available announcements.

Has Pulsar been tested against spoofing?

Furuno reported a July 2026 evaluation at Fukushima Robot Test Field in which Pulsar reception remained stable while spoofing disrupted GNSS signals. The test used a commercial GNSS antenna and receiver evaluation unit with limited firmware modifications; Furuno said the same antenna received both signals. Crucially, the spoofing signals targeted GNSS, not Pulsar specifically. This is a bounded technical demonstration, not proof that Pulsar is immune to spoofing or other interference in all conditions. How should you compare Pulsar with GPS?

There is not enough evidence for a complete independent head-to-head ranking. For a practical comparison, assess the service and equipment rather than relying on a single advertised accuracy or signal-strength figure:

  • Coverage and availability: Check whether Pulsar service is actually available where and when you need it, rather than assuming planned constellation coverage is already operational.
  • Receiver and firmware support: Verify the exact receiver model, required modifications, and integration path with its manufacturer.
  • Positioning and timing: Compare measured performance in your intended use, distinguishing Xona’s published specifications from independently validated results.
  • Interference and authentication: Examine the conditions tested and what was targeted; a test against GNSS spoofing does not establish universal resistance.
  • Deployment maturity: Separate announced launches, regulatory approvals, demonstrations, and partner plans from operational service and supported products.
