Xilinx’s September 2021 announcement introduced two rugged Versal tracks for different markets: defense-grade XQ and space-grade XQR. They are related, but not interchangeable labels. Today, AMD presents the defense line as Versal XQ, with AI Core, AI Edge, Prime, and Premium families. XQ combines programmable logic, processing, and acceleration engines for demanding aerospace and defense systems; exact capabilities, package details, and availability depend on the selected part.

What Xilinx announced—and how XQ differs from XQR

On September 13, 2021, Electronic Design reported that Xilinx was adding both military-grade XQ and space-grade XQR families to Versal. The announcement-era description of Versal highlighted Arm CPU cores, AI and DSP accelerators, programmable logic, and a network-on-chip connecting components. [Electronic Design, September 13, 2021]

The distinction matters: this article focuses on XQ, AMD’s defense-grade adaptive SoC line. XQR is the separate radiation-tolerant, space-grade track. Packaging and screening information published for XQR—including its Class B and Class Y context and lidless BGA options—should not be assumed to apply to XQ. [AMD’s XQR package document]

Which Versal XQ families are available in the portfolio?

AMD’s current defense portfolio lists four lines. AMD describes them by broad workload emphasis; these labels are not a substitute for checking the integration and specifications of a particular device. [AMD Versal XQ product page]

Prime XQ Foundational line for broad applicability Exact processing, logic, interface, and package configuration

AMD’s descriptions do not establish a universal performance ranking among the four families. Choose by the workload and device-level fit, then confirm the selected part in its current datasheet and selection guide.

What is inside an XQ Versal device?

AMD’s portfolio brief describes XQ as integrating programmable logic, dynamically reconfigurable AI/ML engines, DSP engines, and dual-core Arm Cortex-A72 and Cortex-R5 embedded processors. It also lists transceiver rates of 32 Gb/s, 58 Gb/s, and 112 Gb/s across the portfolio. These are portfolio-level descriptions: they do not mean every XQ part includes every engine or every listed rate. [AMD Versal XQ product brief]

Alchitry Au V2 FPGA Development Board - Xilinx Artix-7 XC7A35T, 256MB DDR3, 104 IO Pins, Triple Voltage & LVDS Support, USB JTAG/UART
  • Powerful Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA — Features the XC7A35T-2FTG256I with upgraded speed and temperature grade, delivering exceptional performance for high-speed digital designs, embedded systems, and hardware acceleration projects.
  • 256MB DDR3L Memory — High-speed 800Mb/s DDR3L RAM plus 32Mbit configuration flash enables complex applications requiring fast data buffering and large memory resources.
  • 104 Flexible IO Pins — Includes 22 triple-voltage pins (selectable 3.3V/2.5V/1.8V) with 20 LVDS_25 capable, 44 routed as 100Ω differential pairs, plus XADC analog inputs for versatile interfacing.
  • Easy Programming & Connectivity — Onboard FT2232HQ provides seamless USB JTAG programming and high-speed USB UART (up to 12Mbaud), plus a convenient Qwiic connector for easy I2C expansion.
  • Rich Onboard Features — Equipped with 8 user LEDs, a reset button, 100MHz oscillator, robust multi-voltage power regulation (5-12V input), and extensive voltage rails to support demanding FPGA projects.

The combination lets a system designer place programmable logic and acceleration alongside embedded processing and high-speed connectivity in an adaptive SoC. The practical value depends on how the chosen device maps to the system’s algorithms, interfaces, memory requirements, and software environment; the family name alone does not establish a system-level performance result.

What ruggedization and qualification claims does AMD list?

AMD says the XQ portfolio supports military-temperature operation from -55°C to +125°C and lists full-range extended-temperature testing, MIL-STD-883 Group D qualification testing, MIL-PRF-38535 lead-content compliance, mask-set control, and anti-counterfeiting features. The product brief also mentions information-assurance support, anti-tamper technology, and ruggedized packaging. [AMD Versal XQ product page] [AMD Versal XQ product brief]

  • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, USB-UART Bridge
  • 4 Switches, 4 Buttons, 1 Reset Button, 4 LEDs, 4 RGB LEDs, 4 Pmod connectors, shield connector

These are manufacturer statements about the portfolio, not an independent finding that a particular part or finished system is qualified for every operating environment. For a design, check the exact device documentation for its temperature grade, screening and qualification details, package, and applicable system-level requirements.

Where does AMD identify XQ for use?

AMD lists avionics and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), military and satellite communications (Milcom and Satcom), radar, and electronic warfare among the XQ application areas. [AMD Versal XQ product page]

Does an XQ part have an XC counterpart?

AMD’s product brief states that each XQ device has a footprint-compatible XC counterpart. That is a limited hardware-footprint statement; it does not establish drop-in software compatibility, equivalent screening or qualification, certification, or complete system compatibility. Confirm the exact part numbers and migration requirements with AMD’s current documentation before planning a substitution. [AMD Versal XQ product brief]

How to evaluate an XQ device for a project

  1. Start with the workload. Decide whether the design prioritizes AI inference, edge power and thermal constraints, networking, or a broad mix of functions.
  2. Compare actual device resources. Use the current datasheet and selection guide to check processing and acceleration resources, memory, interfaces, transceiver rates, package, and temperature grade for the exact part number.
  3. Validate ruggedization requirements. Match AMD’s device-specific screening and qualification documentation to the project’s environmental, assurance, and system-level requirements.
  4. Confirm supply and development path. Check current availability directly with AMD or an authorized channel. AMD also describes aerospace and defense platform options such as COTS 3U/6U VPX, system-in-package solutions, and PCIe accelerator and AI cards, but their presence in the ecosystem does not prove compatibility with a particular XQ device. [AMD aerospace and defense platform page]

The 2021 launch coverage included availability expectations for that period; those historical forecasts should not be treated as current supply information. The reviewed current portfolio pages establish the product families, but do not provide a single universal availability answer for every device and region.
