Xiaomi announced on January 17, 2020, that POCO would operate independently and set its own market strategy. The announcement established brand and operational independence, but it did not explain POCO’s legal structure or confirm a transfer of ownership. POCO’s own description says it has independent product, sales and marketing teams while still sharing Xiaomi resources for manufacturing and after-sales.
What Xiaomi actually announced
On January 17, 2020, Xiaomi said POCO would “spin off as an independent brand.” TechCrunch reported that Xiaomi described POCO as running independently and developing its own market strategy. A Xiaomi spokesperson also confirmed that POCO was an independent company at the time, but did not disclose how it would be structured.
Manu Kumar Jain, identified by TechCrunch as Xiaomi’s vice president, said: “POCO F1 is an extremely popular phone across user groups, and remains a top contender in its category even in 2020. We feel the time is right to let POCO operate on its own now, which is why we’re excited to announce that POCO will spin off as an independent brand.”

What “independent” meant in practice
POCO’s current About page describes an independent product, sales and marketing team. The same page says POCO shares Xiaomi resources for manufacturing and after-sales service. Those statements show a split between market-facing decisions and some underlying operations.

Timeline from POCO’s launch to the spin-off
2018: POCO F1 launches
POCO says the POCO F1 was its first product, released in 2018. TechCrunch described POCO as a smartphone sub-brand created by Xiaomi that year. TechCrunch also reported that the F1 launched in 50 markets and was priced at $300; those figures describe the historical launch context, not current availability or pricing.
January 17, 2020: Independent operation announced
Xiaomi announced that POCO would operate on its own and pursue its own market strategy. Contemporary coverage treated this as a spin-off into an independent brand or company, while noting that Xiaomi had not provided the corporate details behind the arrangement.

POCO’s later operating description
POCO’s About page says the brand has independent product, sales and marketing teams and continues to share Xiaomi manufacturing and after-sales resources. The page does not provide a publication date for that description, so it should not be read as a dated announcement beyond the facts it states.
How large was POCO at the time?
POCO’s official About page reports that more than 9 million POCO phones shipped globally in 2020. That is a company-reported figure and is not identified there as independently audited. The page also says POCO entered more than 35 global markets within three years and that the POCO F1 exceeded 2.2 million shipments; those figures should likewise be attributed to POCO rather than treated as independently verified market data.

Was POCO legally separate from Xiaomi?
The sources do not answer that question completely. TechCrunch explicitly reported that a Xiaomi spokesperson did not share how POCO would be structured. The evidence supports an announced independent brand and company-level operational separation in areas such as product, sales and marketing. It does not establish a complete corporate divestiture, a change in ownership, or the precise legal relationship between POCO and Xiaomi.

That distinction matters because “independent brand” can describe autonomy in management without describing who owns the trademark, corporate entity, manufacturing contracts or service network. No conclusion about later ownership or structural changes can be drawn from the January 2020 announcement alone.

For a buyer, this meant a more distinct POCO brand, not proof that POCO phones had become entirely disconnected from Xiaomi’s industrial and service systems.
Bottom line on Xiaomi and POCO

POCO still described shared Xiaomi manufacturing and after-sales resources, and the public record did not disclose the exact legal structure or ownership.
