Verdict: The HD 5850 owner describes a frustrating warranty experience, but the available account does not establish that XFX promised an upgrade or ran a scam. XFX’s current warranty terms allow refurbished replacements and describe the replacement standard as performance-comparable; whether the specific replacement met that standard cannot be verified without its model number and condition.
What happened in the HD 5850 complaint?
In an AnandTech thread started on October 12, 2021, an owner said their XFX Radeon HD 5850 had lasted roughly 12 years before failing. The owner reported that XFX sent a refurbished card they described as another roughly 12-year-old model. They returned it, saying they had expected a newer card and mentioning an RX 580 or RX 590 as examples. Read the original account.
The owner also repeated a friend’s speculation that someone might be buying old XFX cards to satisfy warranty claims. The thread supplies no inventory records, company statement, or other documentation supporting that theory. It also does not include the original warranty, RMA correspondence, replacement serial number, or diagnostic results. The post is evidence of the owner’s account, not proof of why XFX selected that replacement.

“Lifetime” describes the duration of coverage under the specific warranty; it does not, by itself, promise newer hardware as technology advances. A limited warranty generally provides only the remedies and conditions stated in its written terms—often repair, replacement, or another specified remedy. It does not inherently guarantee a new product, a current retail equivalent, better performance, or a step-up to a newer generation.

The exact terms matter, as do the product, purchase date, registration, region, and applicable consumer law. Warranty interpretation is not identical in every jurisdiction. An upgrade program is a separate benefit: it intentionally offers a newer or more capable product under defined conditions. No written XFX promise of such an upgrade appears in the HD 5850 thread.
What did XFX’s older warranty and current policy say?
Historical lifetime eligibility was conditional
XFX’s warranty page lists limited lifetime eligibility for certain older Radeon HD 4000, HD 5000, and HD 6000 cards, as well as selected older GeForce products. Some older Radeon R200 and HD 7000 Double Dissipation models also appear in the historical terms. Eligibility depended on the specific product family and conditions such as registering within 30 days of purchase; transfer rules varied. The current page is the available record here, not necessarily the exact document that accompanied this particular HD 5850 purchase. Check XFX’s warranty terms.

The replacement remedy is not necessarily a new card
For the USA and Canada, XFX’s current policy says it may repair a defective product or, if repair is not possible, replace it with a performance-comparable product. It also says refurbished parts or replacement products that have been inspected and tested may be used. That supports the possibility of a refurbished remedy; it does not prove that every refurbished replacement is acceptable or that the HD 5850 owner’s particular card met the stated standard.

The same page says proof of purchase may be required, customers may have to prepay shipping and accept shipment risk unless otherwise specified, and a replacement generally does not restart or extend the original warranty. A support ticket requires product registration. These are current USA/Canada terms and should not be assumed to govern every region or historical product.

Modern XFX cards have different coverage
XFX’s current warranty page lists model- and series-specific terms. Examples include generally three years with registration for RX 9000, RX 7000, and RX 6000 MERC, QICK, and SWFT cards, and generally two years for AMD reference models in those generations. The page also lists generally three years with registration for specified RX 5000 series models. These examples do not make one universal warranty for all XFX products; check the exact card and region before buying. Browse XFX’s current product families.
Was the refurbished replacement fair?
The forum account is not detailed enough to determine whether the replacement was performance-comparable. “Another old card” does not identify its model, specifications, functionality, or physical condition. Nor does the age of a replacement alone establish that it was inferior: a working same-model card could be closer to the original product class than a newer card with a different performance profile or compatibility.

To assess the claim, compare the original and replacement model numbers and check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- GPU architecture, core configuration, memory capacity, and clock speeds.
- Display outputs, cooling design, and driver or system compatibility.
- Whether the replacement worked reliably under load and arrived in acceptable condition.
- The applicable warranty’s definition of “performance-comparable,” if it provides one.
A newer product name does not automatically mean a better or comparable replacement. If the replacement was defective, materially weaker, or inconsistent with a specific written promise, that would strengthen the case for a warranty failure. If it was functional and comparable under the applicable terms, a refurbished unit could be a disappointing but permitted remedy.

What do other XFX customer accounts establish?
Other posts in the AnandTech discussion point in different directions: some commenters considered a claim accepted after 12 years unusually generous, while others described upgrades or positive service experiences. A separate HardForum discussion includes an unverified allegation about lost registration records alongside a user saying their registrations worked. These are individual reports, not a representative study of XFX’s service or failure rates. See the second page of the AnandTech discussion and the HardForum thread.
What should you document before buying or filing an RMA?
Before buying
- Read the warranty for the exact model and your region; do not infer current coverage from an older card’s “lifetime” terms.
- Check the coverage period, registration deadline, transferability, proof-of-purchase requirements, shipping terms, and whether refurbished replacements are allowed.
- Look for the precise replacement wording: “same model,” “equivalent,” “comparable,” or “current equivalent” can set different expectations.
- Keep the invoice and registration confirmation. A warranty’s duration is not a promise of future upgrades.
Before shipping a failed card
- Record the exact model and serial number, and photograph the product label and card condition.
- Find the original invoice, registration confirmation, and warranty version that applied when you bought the card.
- Open a support ticket through the applicable regional process and ask in writing whether a replacement may be refurbished and how XFX assesses comparability.
- Save the RMA number, support correspondence, shipping receipts, and tracking information. Photograph the card and packaging before dispatch.
- Test a replacement promptly. Record its model number, condition, and any faults; contact support with those details if it is defective or appears materially different from the promised remedy.
For USA and Canada, XFX says certain self-service graphics-card tasks, including replacing thermal paste and cleaning dust, do not automatically void the limited warranty, while accidental physical damage remains excluded. Do not generalize that allowance to other regions or older policies; check the terms that apply to your card.
