You can use a compatible Xfinity remote to control an AV receiver’s volume—and, on some setups, power—after pairing the remote with your Xfinity TV box. On X1, Xumo Stream Box, and Flex, start the Voice Remote’s on-screen setup and opt in when asked about audio receiver control. Then test the receiver’s volume before relying on the setup.
Set up an AV receiver with an Xfinity Voice Remote
On X1, Xumo Stream Box, and Flex, Xfinity’s guided Voice Remote setup handles box pairing first, then TV controls and optional audio receiver controls. Follow the prompts for the devices you actually want the remote to operate.
- Aim the Voice Remote at the Xfinity TV box, press the microphone or Voice button, and say “Program remote.” Follow the on-screen prompts to pair it with that box.
- When asked whether the remote should control TV power and volume, select Yes. Enter the TV brand, select OK, and select OK again when “Ready to pair” appears. Test the TV volume. Select It Works! if it responds; otherwise select It Doesn’t Work and continue through the prompts.
- At the prompt “Do you want to control your audio receiver using your remote?”, select Yes if you want receiver control. Enter the receiver brand and select OK; select OK again at “Ready to pair.”
- Test the receiver’s volume. Confirm It Works! only if the receiver responds.
Xfinity describes receiver control as optional. You do not need to buy a receiver or replace a working remote just to try programming it. See Xfinity’s remote setup instructions.
Find the right code if guided setup fails
If setup does not identify the receiver brand or the test fails, use Xfinity’s Remote Code Lookup and choose the exact remote model before searching. On X1, open Remote Settings to see the remote model; the settings also include TV and Volume Control setup. Xfinity says X1 Remote Setup guides RF pairing and IR programming for TV and audio devices.

Do not assume a TV code will control an AV receiver. Use the code or instructions for the receiver and the exact remote model, then test receiver volume—and power if the instructions support it. Pairing the remote to the TV box alone does not establish that receiver controls are programmed.
Choose instructions for your remote and TV box
Xfinity remote generations do not share one universal button sequence. Use the route for your model rather than transferring a procedure from another remote.

| Remote or box | Setup route |
|---|---|
| XR16 | No Setup or number buttons: aim at the TV box, say “Program remote” into the microphone, and follow the on-screen flow. |
| XR11 | Use the guided audio receiver flow or code lookup for receiver setup. Xfinity’s separate unlisted-TV fallback is to hold Setup until the light changes from red to green, enter 9-9-1, press Channel Up until the TV turns off, then press Setup to save. That fallback is for an unlisted TV brand, not a substitute receiver code procedure. |
| XR15 | Use the guided flow or code lookup for the receiver. For an unlisted TV, Xfinity documents holding Xfinity and Mute for five seconds until the light changes from red to green, entering the first five-digit code, and testing Power, Volume, and Mute; try the next code if it fails. The support instructions also describe an on-screen three-digit pairing-code route. |
| XR2/XR5 and similar legacy code-based remotes | Xfinity’s older guide says to program the TV first if controlling both TV and AVR, then enter an AVR manufacturer code and test power, volume, and mute. Try another listed code if those controls fail. |
| Legacy TV box | Open Menu → iTV → Self Help → Set Up Remote. Choose the remote model, device type (including audio), and brand, then follow the displayed steps. |
The legacy box route is documented in Xfinity’s remote self-help instructions. The older XR2/XR5 sequence is in Xfinity’s XR2/XR5 guide.
Troubleshoot receiver controls that do not respond
- Check the box pairing. A voice remote is paired with one TV box until it is factory reset. Make sure it is paired with the box you are using.
- Confirm the model before looking up codes. X1 Remote Settings shows the remote model. Select that exact model in Remote Code Lookup.
- Retry the model-specific setup. If a code fails, repeat the applicable setup and try another listed code when that model’s instructions offer one. Verify actual receiver response rather than relying on a successful TV-box pairing.
- Check the batteries. Xfinity notes that replacing batteries can help when remote buttons do not work.
- Reset only as a later remedy. A factory reset erases the TV-box connection, so you must pair the remote again. Reset combinations vary among XR11, XR15, XR16, XR100, and legacy models; follow the instructions for your exact remote rather than borrowing another model’s sequence.
Xfinity’s published material does not establish that every AV receiver is supported or provide a complete receiver compatibility matrix. Check the exact remote and receiver through the current lookup and confirm operation with the receiver itself. If the original remote is missing or broken, Xfinity says a replacement can be obtained at a retail store or mailed through Xfinity Assistant; that is a hardware remedy, not a normal requirement for programming.
