The TEMPUR Starfield gaming cockpit was a custom promotional chair displayed at Xbox’s Gamescom booth in 2023—not a documented retail gaming chair. TEMPUR described it as hand-built, styled around Starfield’s NASA Punk aesthetic and fitted with a joystick in each armrest. Its comfort was part of the presentation, not an independently measured result, and TEMPUR’s account does not establish that the chair ever went on general sale.
What was the TEMPUR Starfield gaming cockpit?
TEMPUR’s October 8, 2023 account described a bespoke chair created with Xbox for Starfield and shown at the Xbox Gamescom booth ahead of the game’s September 6, 2023 launch. Designer Nicholas Alexander and his team designed and hand-built the chair, according to TEMPUR. The project joined the game’s space-exploration theme with TEMPUR’s own brand story about space.
The name “cockpit” reflects the chair’s intended spaceship-piloting experience. Xbox global partnerships director Marcos Waltenberg described it as a modular cockpit, while TEMPUR UK managing director Tobin James connected the collaboration to the company’s space history and pressure-absorbing material. Those descriptions are promotional statements: the account provides no independent comfort testing, ergonomic measurements or performance results.

NASA Punk styling
TEMPUR said the chair drew on Starfield’s NASA Punk visual language. In a September 6, 2023 Microsoft feature, Starfield art director Istvan Pely explained that NASA Punk aims to evoke early spaceflight’s romance and the wonder of exploration, using technology that is advanced but still grounded and relatable. The feature describes the game’s ships as retro and analog, with physical buttons and switches and a worn, lived-in quality. That design approach helps explain why a physical cockpit motif suited the game.

Joystick controls in both armrests
TEMPUR’s account says each armrest had a joystick, with the sticks rotating left and right to provide independent movement controls. The source describes those built-in controls but does not provide technical specifications, compatibility details or evidence that the chair was a production gaming peripheral.
Could you buy the chair?
The available TEMPUR account does not document a standard retail release, a retail price or an order route. It reported plans for the chair to appear at Saturn Xperion in Germany after Gamescom, at TEMPUR’s Stratford shopping-centre store in London for a month in October 2023, and in a charity raffle by the end of that year. Those are plans reported in 2023; the account does not confirm whether each event or raffle took place.
That makes the cockpit best understood as a one-off branded showcase rather than a chair shoppers can assume is available. A later public appearance or raffle would not, by itself, establish that a retail version was made.
