In short: The Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card can store and play Series X|S-optimized games. A USB external drive can store those games, but Seagate says you must move them to the console’s internal storage or the Expansion Card to play. USB drives can also play supported non-optimized and backward-compatible games directly.
What’s the difference between storing a game and playing it?
A game can remain installed on a drive without being playable from that drive. That distinction matters most for Series X|S-optimized titles: a USB drive can hold one, but the title must be moved to the console’s internal storage or a Storage Expansion Card before you can play it. Seagate explains this requirement in its external USB drive guidance.
What can each drive store and play?
| Drive | Store Series X|S-optimized games? | Play Series X|S-optimized games directly? | Play supported older games directly? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Yes | Yes. Microsoft describes the card as a custom storage solution with the full speed and performance of Xbox Velocity Architecture. See Xbox Support’s Expansion Card guidance. | Not established by the cited sources for this comparison. |
| USB external drive | Yes | No. Move the game to the console’s internal storage or Expansion Card to play it, according to Seagate. | Yes, for supported non-optimized and previous-generation games. Xbox Wire says previous-generation Xbox titles can be played directly from external USB 3.2 hard drives; that statement does not mean every older title is compatible. See its Xbox Series X|S technology glossary. |
When should you choose the Expansion Card?
Choose the Expansion Card if your priority is playing Series X|S-optimized games from added storage without moving them back to the console’s internal storage. Microsoft describes it as extending storage while retaining Xbox Velocity Architecture performance. Current models, capacities, prices, and availability can change; check Xbox’s current product and support information before buying.

A USB drive is useful for playing supported non-optimized or older-generation games directly, and for keeping optimized titles installed when you are not currently playing them. When you want to play an optimized title stored on USB, move it to the console’s internal storage or Expansion Card first. This makes USB practical as bulk or staging storage, but not as direct-play expansion for optimized games.

- Play optimized games from expanded storage: Choose the Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card.
- Play supported older or non-optimized games from external storage: A USB external drive can do this.
- Keep optimized games installed but free console space: A USB drive can store them, with the trade-off that you must move a game back to internal storage or the Expansion Card before playing.
- Avoid moving optimized games between drives: The Expansion Card is the more direct fit because it can play those games from the card.
USB 3.x external HDDs and SSDs are broad product categories, not a guarantee that every drive behaves identically. The cited guidance does not establish a minimum capacity, setup procedure, current Expansion Card lineup, or a universal speed or price comparison, so check current Xbox documentation and the specific product details for those questions.
