Both Xbox Series X and Series S support the published performance modes for Gears of War: Reloaded: 60 FPS in Campaign and up to 120 FPS in multiplayer. Choose Series X if you want native 4K output, a UHD Blu-ray drive, or access to physical Xbox discs. Choose Series S if you are happy with digital-only games and a console designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling.

What’s different between Series X and Series S?

The main differences for a Gears player are the display target and whether you need a disc drive. Xbox describes Series X as displaying games in native 4K and including a UHD Blu-ray player. Series S is disc-free and designed for 1440p, with the ability to upscale to 4K. These are console-level descriptions, not guarantees that every game renders at the same resolution; results depend on the game and display. Xbox’s console comparison explains the hardware positioning.

Priority Better fit What Xbox says
Native 4K output Series X Xbox describes Series X as displaying games in native 4K; the actual game resolution varies.
1440p design with 4K upscaling Series S Xbox describes Series S as designed for 1440p and able to upscale to 4K.
Physical Xbox discs or UHD Blu-rays Series X Series X includes a UHD Blu-ray disc player.
Digital-only library Series S Series S is disc-free and uses digital games only.

Xbox’s backward-compatibility overview says most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S, but enhancements vary by title. That means a general claim about backward compatibility should not be mistaken for a promise that every older Gears game has identical resolution or frame rate on both consoles.

How does Gears of War: Reloaded run on each console?

Xbox Wire’s May 5, 2025 announcement for Gears of War: Reloaded lists 4K, 60 FPS Campaign, and up to 120 FPS multiplayer. The game launched August 26, 2025 for Xbox Series X|S and other platforms, and Xbox’s Store description calls it natively optimized for Series X|S. These are published specifications, not independent performance measurements. Read the Xbox Wire announcement.

In an official Xbox podcast, The Coalition staff clarified that the 60 FPS and up-to-120-FPS modes are available on Series S as well as Series X. A 120 Hz-compatible display is needed to use a 120 FPS mode; the console alone cannot make a standard 60 Hz display show 120 frames per second. The podcast discussion also says Dolby Vision is available on both consoles for this game, but that does not establish a universal HDR feature claim for every Gears title. Xbox’s Store listing for Reloaded identifies Series X|S optimization. The published feature claims do not provide a separate measured Series S resolution or a controlled comparison of image quality between consoles.

What about Gears 5 and older Gears games?

Gears 5 is optimized for Series X|S. Its Xbox Store listing names reduced loading times, Instant Resume, 120 FPS in Versus, and variable refresh rates. It specifically describes Series X visuals as 4K HDR Ultra; it does not give a matching Series S resolution figure. The 120 FPS statement applies to Versus, not necessarily every part of the game. See the Gears 5 Xbox Store listing.

For other entries in the franchise, consult the listing for the individual game. Xbox says backward-compatible enhancements vary by title, so the published Reloaded and Gears 5 details should not be generalized to the entire series.

Which console should you buy for Gears of War?

Choose Series X if

  • You want the strongest fit for a 4K display, while recognizing that each game determines its actual rendering resolution.
  • You own physical Xbox games, want to buy used or disc copies, or need a UHD Blu-ray drive.
  • You want the option to use a disc library with compatible backward-compatible titles.

Choose Series S if

  • You buy and play games digitally and do not need a disc drive.
  • You are comfortable with a console designed for 1440p output and 4K upscaling.
  • You mainly want to play Reloaded’s announced 60 FPS Campaign or up-to-120-FPS multiplayer modes: Coalition staff said both modes are available on Series S too.

There is no independent, current side-by-side test here establishing measured resolution, frame pacing, or visual quality for the Gears games. The recommendation therefore rests on Xbox’s published console and game descriptions, not a claim that one console has been benchmarked as faster in a particular Gears scene.
