The Xbox Series X is a strong fit if you want a 4K-capable console, play physical Xbox games or 4K UHD Blu-ray discs, or want access to a broad library of compatible games from earlier Xbox generations. Its headline performance is not guaranteed in every game, however: 4K at up to 120 frames per second requires supported content and a compatible display. Whether it is worth choosing over the disc-free Series S depends mainly on your display, media library, storage needs, and local price.

What are the main advantages of Xbox Series X?
4K capability and high frame rates
Microsoft lists true 4K gaming and performance up to 120 FPS for Series X. The important qualification is that the game must support the mode and the display must support it too. A console specification is not a promise that every title will render at 4K and 120 FPS simultaneously.

Access to compatible games from earlier Xbox generations
Microsoft says Series X works with thousands of games across four Xbox generations. That makes it useful for players with an existing Xbox library, but compatibility applies to supported titles—not every game ever released for an Xbox console.
For a supported disc game, the console downloads the game to storage, and the disc must remain in the drive while you play. That means the disc-equipped Series X models can be useful for an existing physical library; the Digital Edition cannot use game discs.
Quick Resume and loading features
Microsoft attributes faster loading and switching among multiple games to Xbox Velocity Architecture and Quick Resume. These are platform features, not a fixed loading-time guarantee for every game. Their practical value is convenience: you can move between supported game sessions without treating each launch like a fresh start.

Disc playback on selected configurations
The Carbon Black and Galaxy Black configurations listed on Microsoft’s US page include a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. That drive provides a reason to choose a disc-equipped model if you own physical Xbox games or UHD Blu-ray movies. The 1TB Digital Edition is all digital, so verify the exact configuration before buying rather than assuming every Series X listing has a drive.
Storage choices and expansion
The US product page lists Series X configurations with 1TB or 2TB of storage. If you need more room, Microsoft says its Series X|S Storage Expansion Card connects through the dedicated port and matches the internal storage’s performance. The card is optional and sold separately.
Microsoft also supports standard external USB storage, but distinguishes it from the performance-matching expansion card. Check Microsoft’s storage guidance and the requirements for the games you plan to use before choosing a drive.

What are the disadvantages of Xbox Series X?
The best-looking performance modes are conditional
“4K at up to 120FPS” is Microsoft’s stated capability, with the explicit condition that supported content and a supported display are required. Some games may offer different combinations of resolution and frame rate. If your display does not support the relevant features, or a game does not offer the mode, the console cannot make that title run at the advertised maximum.

Series X is not a single identical hardware configuration. Microsoft’s US page lists a disc-equipped 1TB Carbon Black model, an all-digital 1TB Digital Edition, and a disc-equipped 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition. If you depend on physical games or movie discs, the Digital Edition is the wrong configuration.
More storage adds cost
The expansion card is not included with the console. Microsoft says prices and availability vary by retailer and market, and its product page does not establish a universal current price. Factor the optional card into your decision if your installed library is likely to outgrow the internal storage.

Microsoft describes Series X as offering native 4K gaming and a UHD Blu-ray option on disc-equipped configurations. Series S is disc-free and designed for 1440p, with the ability to upscale to 4K. Both consoles support up to 120 FPS when the game and display support it, so that figure alone does not distinguish them.

Will your Xbox One games and controllers work?
Microsoft states that Series X supports thousands of compatible games across four Xbox generations, including Xbox One and selected older-generation titles. Check a particular game against Microsoft’s compatibility information if it is important to your decision. For supported disc games, you need a disc-equipped Series X and must keep the game disc in the drive to play.
Microsoft’s product FAQ also addresses Xbox One controller use on Series X. Check the compatibility details for the controller and accessories you own, especially if a specific model or feature is essential.
