Choose the Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card if you want to play Series X|S-optimized games directly from added storage. Choose a USB 3.1 external drive if you mainly want to store games, play backward-compatible titles, or move games between storage locations. Xbox’s comparison says optimized games cannot be played from USB storage; a USB drive is still useful as a library or transfer drive.

How the two storage options compare

What you want to do Storage Expansion Card USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD
Play Series X|S-optimized games directly Yes No, according to Xbox’s comparison
Play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games Yes Yes
Store games and move or copy them between storage Yes Yes
Performance relative to the internal SSD Designed to match internal SSD performance Does not replicate internal SSD performance
Best fit Direct-play expansion for optimized games Game library, backward-compatible play, and transfers

This is Xbox’s documented compatibility comparison, not a third-party speed test. Xbox describes the card as matching internal storage performance, while its comparison does not allow optimized games to run from USB storage. Xbox Wire’s storage primer

When the Storage Expansion Card is the better buy

Buy the proprietary Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card if your priority is installing and playing Series X|S-optimized games from additional storage without first moving them to the console’s internal drive. Microsoft says the card is designed to match internal SSD performance, and Xbox lists it as compatible with Series S. Microsoft’s Seagate Storage Expansion Card page

The card is the straightforward choice when you want added capacity to behave like an extension of the console’s built-in storage for supported games. It also supports storing and moving or copying games between local and external storage. Xbox Wire’s explanation of storage behavior

When a USB external drive is the better buy

A USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD makes sense if you want an inexpensive-feeling, flexible game library, need to play Xbox One, Xbox 360, or Original Xbox games from external storage, or want to move games between drives. Xbox says USB storage can store any Xbox game, even when an optimized Series X|S game cannot be played from it. For that case, move or copy the game to the internal SSD or Expansion Card before playing. Xbox Wire’s storage comparison

Do not buy a USB drive expecting it to be equivalent to the Expansion Card for direct play of optimized games. USB storage is a useful supplement, but it serves a different role.

Capacity and compatibility for Series S

Microsoft’s Series S product page lists console configurations with 512 GB or 1 TB internal storage; these are stated capacities, not the amount guaranteed to remain available for games after system use. The page also lists three USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and support for USB external HDDs and Storage Expansion Cards. Xbox Series S specifications

How to decide before buying

  1. Decide whether direct play of optimized games matters. If yes, choose the Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive cannot run those games directly under Xbox’s documented comparison.
  2. Consider what you play from external storage. If your external-drive use is mainly backward-compatible games, a USB 3.1 HDD or SSD is supported.
  3. Choose capacity based on your library. Compare your console’s 512 GB or 1 TB stated configuration with the card capacities currently listed in your market; consider that the console’s usable space is less than its stated internal capacity.
  4. Check live local prices and stock. The official feature information establishes the functional difference, but prices and availability change and are not established here.

What Xbox says about performance

Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox Wire storage primer specifies 2.4 GB/s raw internal SSD I/O throughput for the console architecture. That figure is not a USB-drive benchmark and should not be used to predict transfer times. Xbox describes the Expansion Card as designed to match internal storage performance; no independent head-to-head USB-versus-card speed measurement is established here. Xbox Wire, September 24, 2020
