Xbox first said players would be able to buy games through its Android app starting in November 2024. The later documented rollout came in April 2025: Xbox said purchases and Game Pass signups were beginning to roll out to beta users on Android and iOS, with wider availability to follow. The feature lets you purchase Xbox games in the app; it does not install console games to run locally on an Android phone.
Can you buy Xbox games through the Android app?
Yes. Xbox’s April 2025 announcement described buying games and add-on content in the mobile app. It said that, when a payment method is saved, a Buy button appears on a game’s detail page. The Google Play listing for the Xbox app, updated September 14, 2026, also describes buying games without leaving the app. Store listings and features can change, and the available sources do not provide a complete list of countries, account restrictions, or eligible titles.
Xbox later added a dedicated Store tab, wishlists, and search for add-ons, according to its December 2025 update. Those features make the app a place to browse and purchase; they do not mean every title or add-on is available to every account.
What did Xbox announce, and when did it arrive?

The documented rollout therefore differs from the original November 2024 target: Xbox’s later updates place the feature’s arrival in April 2025. The available announcements do not establish why the schedule changed. Although the 2024 report discussed the announcement in the context of a U.S. court ruling involving Google’s mobile store, that context alone does not prove the ruling caused the timing.

Does buying a game install it on an Android phone?
No such capability is established by Xbox’s purchase announcements or the Google Play listing. They describe buying Xbox games and add-ons through the app, not downloading and running console versions as native Android games. A purchase should not be treated as an automatic grant of cloud-play access either; the cited announcements do not promise that.
Xbox’s April 2025 examples included preordering Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 and pre-installing it on an Xbox console from the app. That illustrates the difference: an app purchase can be connected to getting a game ready on a console, rather than installing the console game on the phone. The announcement also mentioned Assassin’s Creed Shadows and MLB The Show 25 as purchase examples; these are historical examples, not a statement of the current catalog.

How are purchases different from Game Pass and Remote Play?
Buying a game or add-on
A game or add-on purchase is a transaction for that item. Xbox’s April update said the app would support buying games and add-on content, with a Buy button on game-detail pages for users with a saved payment method.

Xbox also said users could join Game Pass through the app. A subscription is distinct from purchasing an individual game and should not be described as ownership of every title in the Game Pass catalog.

Playing remotely
Remote Play is separate from buying. Xbox said Remote Play would no longer be available directly through the Xbox app and would remain accessible through mobile browsers. Xbox’s April update described that change alongside the app’s new store experience; it does not make the purchase feature itself a streaming service.

What should Android users expect?
- Use the Xbox app’s Store or a game’s detail page to find in-app purchase options where they are available; the exact interface and eligibility may vary as the app changes.
- A saved payment method was the condition Xbox cited for displaying a Buy button in its April 2025 announcement.
- Check the specific game and account in the app: the announcements do not document a universal country list or guarantee that every game can be bought this way.
- Keep purchase, subscription, console installation, and remote play separate when deciding how you will access a game.
