In 2015, Xbox Music let you add your own tracks to a OneDrive Music folder and access them through Xbox Music apps without an Xbox Music Pass. Microsoft later renamed Xbox Music to Groove Music, then ended Groove Music Pass streaming and sales after December 31, 2017. Whether the original OneDrive-to-Xbox collection workflow still works on current devices is unconfirmed.
How the OneDrive music integration worked
Microsoft announced the feature on March 18, 2015. Users uploaded owned music files to the Music folder in OneDrive; those tracks then appeared in their Xbox Music collection. The documented setup was to place the files in that folder, sign in with the relevant Microsoft/Xbox account, and open Xbox Music. Microsoft also described playlists that could combine personal OneDrive tracks with Xbox Music Pass music.

Microsoft’s announcement said the collection could be accessed in Xbox Music apps for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and on the web. The personal-collection feature did not require an Xbox Music Pass. Microsoft’s March 18, 2015 announcement describes the original workflow and supported products.

The feature evolved alongside the Xbox Music-to-Groove branding change. Microsoft later described uploading music from a PC to OneDrive and making a playlist available across Windows, Xbox, Android, iOS, and Sonos. In September 2015, Microsoft separately announced that users could add MP3 or iTunes tracks to OneDrive, then select Groove in the Sonos app.

Did you need Xbox Music Pass or extra storage?
No Xbox Music Pass was required for the basic personal-music collection feature. The subscription mattered for Xbox Music Pass catalog streaming, which could be combined in playlists with owned tracks.

In 2015, Microsoft said OneDrive users had 15 GB of free storage and that active Xbox Music Pass subscribers received an additional 100 GB for music. These are historical figures and offers, not statements of current OneDrive storage or subscription benefits. Microsoft later marked the free-storage offer in its original post as no longer valid. See the original announcement and its update and Microsoft’s April 2015 explanation.
What happened to Xbox Music and Groove?
Xbox Music was later branded Groove Music. On October 2, 2017, Microsoft announced that Groove Music Pass streaming, music purchases, and downloads would end after December 31, 2017. Microsoft said the Groove app would continue to play and manage owned music, but that statement does not establish that the original OneDrive collection workflow remains supported on current versions of Windows or Xbox.

Current support for the exact Xbox Music/Groove workflow—placing tracks in OneDrive’s Music folder and having them appear as an Xbox personal collection—is unconfirmed. The official documentation described here establishes how it worked historically, but does not confirm availability on 2026 Xbox or Windows releases. Do not rely on the old instructions as proof of current console support.

If you are trying to use a personal library now, check current Microsoft support information for your specific Xbox and Windows versions before moving or organizing a collection around this workflow. The historical feature was a cloud collection integration, not simply a guarantee that any OneDrive-stored audio file could be browsed or played by any current Xbox app.
