Xbox announced about 3,200 planned role reductions across FY27 in July 2026, then announced 268 more role eliminations on September 22. A September 28 report by Game Developer put Xbox’s cumulative layoff notices since October 2023 at at least 5,750, while noting that the full scale remains unclear. The available company and union statements do not confirm that The Coalition is facing new cuts.
How many people has Xbox laid off?
There is no audited cumulative total in the Xbox announcements covered here. The often-quoted figure of at least 5,750 comes from Game Developer, which reported on September 28, 2026, that Xbox workers had received that many layoff notices since October 2023. The publication said the full scale of post-merger reductions remained unclear, so the figure should be treated as secondary reporting, not an official Microsoft headcount.
Xbox’s own announcements provide separate figures for its 2026 restructuring. They describe planned reductions and actions announced during an ongoing reset; they do not establish that every role in the plan had already been eliminated. The figures should not be added together as though they were independent, completed totals.

| Date and source | Figure or statement | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| July 6, 2026 — Xbox | Approximately 3,200 role reductions across FY27, including approximately 1,600 that day | A planned reduction across the fiscal year, not 3,200 people laid off on July 6. Xbox also said four studios would move to new management. |
| September 22, 2026 — Xbox | 268 roles eliminated | The announced roles were across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. |
| September 22, 2026 — Xbox | Roughly three-quarters through the announced restructuring | Xbox’s progress estimate for the overall reset, including studio divestitures; it is not a headcount figure. |
| September 28, 2026 — Game Developer | At least 5,750 layoff notices since October 2023 | A reported cumulative figure, with the publication saying the full scale of reductions remained unclear. |
In its July 6 employee message, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma called the action “the most significant restructure in XBOX history” and said, “Our business today is not healthy.” Xbox also said no publicly announced first-party games or projects were being cancelled as part of the July reductions. That statement was limited to publicly announced projects; it does not establish that every internal project or role was unaffected.

On September 22, Xbox said the 268 roles were being eliminated as part of the continuing reset. Its separate “roughly three-quarters” estimate included studio divestitures, so it cannot be converted into a verified number of workers affected.
Is The Coalition affected, and are more cuts coming?
The Xbox announcement about the September 22 cuts does not name The Coalition as a target. The official Xbox and CWA statements cited here also do not establish that Coalition employees fear further cuts. That specific claim therefore cannot be confirmed from these sources.

Nor do the announcements establish whether additional layoffs will happen. Xbox described a restructuring in progress, but the available statements provide no confirmed schedule or count for future cuts. A claim that The Coalition is facing new reductions needs a separate, directly verifiable source before it can be stated as fact.
What has CWA said about the layoffs?
The Communications Workers of America (CWA) has described organizing among Xbox workers and called for protections in response to the reductions. These are the union’s statements and positions, not independent findings about every affected employee.

- On July 7, CWA said its members were among those affected by the initial July layoffs. It described seeking bargaining over severance, internal placement, vendor-contract decisions, and recall rights. The union reported that more than 3,500 Xbox workers had chosen to unionize with CWA since 2022.
- On August 20, CWA described rallies in the United States and Canada opposing layoffs and calling for fair first contracts. The union said it represented nearly 4,000 video-game workers at Xbox in the U.S. and Canada, and reported filing unfair-labor-practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The charges are CWA’s allegations, not a finding by the NLRB.
- In response to the September 22 announcement, CWA said it did not expect those 268 layoffs to affect union-represented workers. That was the union’s expectation about that specific round, not a guarantee about other workers or future changes.
