If you want to keep access to the games you choose, buy them individually rather than relying on a rotating subscription catalog. On Xbox, a physical game disc is the clearest way to retain a copy; on Windows PC, you can build a library through individual storefront purchases, while checking each store’s license and offline-access terms. Subscriptions such as Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Ubisoft+ are better treated as ways to sample a broad or changing selection—not as permanent collections.
Why Game Pass may not fit a keep-your-games preference
Game Pass provides access to a catalog for as long as the subscription remains active and a game stays in that catalog. Xbox says subscribers can access catalog games until their subscription ends or a game leaves the service. Catalogs and features vary by time, region, plan, and platform. Buying a title individually better fits someone who wants to return to selected games without depending on a subscription. That does not always mean owning the underlying software outright: digital storefronts generally grant access under their terms. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement, for example, says, “Your license confers no title or ownership in the Content and Services.” Steam Subscriber Agreement.

Best Xbox route: buy physical games individually
For an Xbox player who prefers keeping a copy, buying the specific game on disc is the most straightforward console option. Check that the game supports your console and that your Xbox has a working disc drive. Compare new and used prices, and consider whether the game depends on online servers or includes content that may require separate downloads.

Microsoft also offers a limited Disc-to-Digital feature for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs. In its August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox said the feature would begin with Xbox Insiders and initially cover thousands of titles. For an eligible game, you insert the disc, claim the digital entitlement, and launch the game; the disc continues to work. Xbox Wire’s Disc-to-Digital announcement.
This is not a way to turn any disc into an unrestricted digital purchase. Microsoft’s usage rules say the limited-access digital license depends on successfully claiming a supported disc and continuing to possess it. Microsoft may require revalidation, can suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess the disc, and does not allow the license to be transferred separately from it. Not every disc qualifies, and eligibility may change. Check the exact title and console before relying on the feature. Microsoft’s usage rules.

Best PC route: buy selected games from a storefront
Windows players can choose among multiple storefronts rather than depending on one subscription catalog. Microsoft lists Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG among the PC storefronts available on Windows. Their features and terms are not interchangeable. Microsoft’s overview of downloading PC games.
- Steam: Read the license and account terms rather than assuming that “buy” means ownership of the software. Valve explicitly describes Steam content access as a license, not title or ownership. Steam Subscriber Agreement.
- Epic Games Store: Check the store’s terms, launcher requirements, and the individual game’s offline and DRM behavior before buying.
- GOG: If offline installers or reduced reliance on a launcher matter to you, confirm the specific game’s current download and DRM terms. A storefront’s general reputation does not establish the delivery terms for every game.
Before purchasing, check that the game runs on your hardware, whether it needs a launcher or an online connection, whether cloud saves are available, and what you can do if account access is interrupted. Buying from a storefront can still involve account-based licensing even when it is not a subscription.

How to decide whether buying or subscribing makes sense
There is no established universal break-even point. Compare the money you expect to spend on games you will actually play with the subscription charges you would pay over the same period, using local prices and real sale prices. Xbox’s current US reference is $22.99 per month for Game Pass Ultimate and $13.99 per month for PC Game Pass, announced April 21, 2026; Xbox says prices may vary by region. - Buying individual games is a closer fit if you mainly replay a small set of titles, want to choose exactly what you pay for, or care about keeping a physical disc.
- A subscription may be worthwhile if you regularly try many games and are comfortable losing catalog access when your membership ends or a title leaves.
- Compare the access, not just the price: weigh continued access after cancellation, physical versus account-based access, DRM and offline needs, platform or device costs, and whether the games you want are available.
What Game Pass costs and includes right now
As shown on Xbox’s plan page on October 4, 2026, Xbox advertises 400+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and hundreds of PC titles for PC Game Pass. Xbox Wire’s April 21, 2026 announcement said future Call of Duty games would join Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season, about a year after release, while existing Call of Duty titles in the library would remain available.
