Yes—Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature can let you play an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc game without inserting the disc every time. But it is not a permanent conversion into a digital copy you can keep after selling or giving away the disc: Microsoft’s rules make continued possession of the qualifying disc a condition of access.
How Xbox disc-to-digital works
Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026. To claim an entitlement, insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a supported Xbox console and launch the game. After the entitlement is claimed, you can play without inserting the disc for each session. The disc itself continues to work as before. Xbox said the rollout had reached all players in its September 29 announcement, as reported by Tom’s Hardware on September 30, 2026.
Xbox described the feature as “starting with thousands of titles,” but did not publish an exact eligible-title count. “Most” does not mean every disc: availability can vary, and Xbox or Microsoft may add or remove eligible titles. Check current support for the exact title and disc before relying on it.

Why you still need to keep the disc
Microsoft calls these “Disc to Digital Licensed Games.” The license is conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require you to revalidate eligibility, and it may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess that disc. The license cannot be transferred separately from the disc.

That means you can avoid routine disc swapping, but you should not treat the process as buying or creating an independent digital copy. If you sell or give away the qualifying disc, you risk losing access to its associated digital entitlement.
What you need to claim an entitlement
- An eligible disc: Eligibility is title-specific and can change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons.
- A supported disc-drive Xbox console: The official process requires inserting the qualifying disc into a supported console and launching the game. Xbox’s published materials do not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility list.
- Continued possession of the qualifying disc: Keep it if you want to preserve the entitlement.
Xbox’s announcement identifies supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs and consoles, but does not establish compatibility with every console configuration. Confirm the specific hardware and title support before you count on the feature.

What digital benefits may be available
Xbox says a claimed entitlement can bring digital benefits, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported. Those are title-dependent benefits, not a promise that every eligible disc game can be played on PC or streamed. Check support for the individual game if either capability matters to you.

Microsoft’s general digital-game rules allow access on the account holder’s Home Xbox or on roaming consoles where the account holder signs in, with play limited to one console at a time. General Home Xbox sharing rules also let other people using that console access shared digital content without the purchaser signed in. On a non-Home console, the purchaser’s roaming license depends on their sign-in and internet connection. These are the general digital-sharing rules; Microsoft’s published materials do not confirm every edge case for every disc-to-digital title.

Should you claim a disc-to-digital entitlement?
Before using or buying a physical disc for this purpose, check four things:
- Confirm that the exact game and disc are currently eligible.
- Make sure you can retain possession of that disc; the entitlement is not separately transferable.
- Have access to a supported disc-drive Xbox console to insert the disc and launch the game for the claim.
- If PC play or cloud gaming is important, verify that the specific title supports Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming.
The feature is useful when you want to stop swapping discs during ordinary play and can keep the qualifying disc. It does not remove the disc’s role in the license.
