Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature lets you claim a digital entitlement for a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game by inserting its disc and launching the game. The disc remains usable. As of September 29, 2026, Windows Central reported that SEGA games had begun joining the program and that the process was automatic on insertion—but not every SEGA title is confirmed compatible.
How Xbox disc-to-digital works
Microsoft’s August 26, 2026 announcement describes a simple process: insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into the console and launch the game to claim its digital entitlement. The entitlement adds digital access; it does not replace the disc. Microsoft says the disc continues to work as before, and digital features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming are available where supported. Microsoft’s announcement does not detail every account, region, offline-play, resale, or transfer condition.
Windows Central reported on September 29, 2026 that the entitlement process had become automatic when a participating disc is inserted, rather than requiring an additional manual menu step. That is a reported implementation detail; Microsoft’s announcement describes inserting and launching the game. Windows Central’s report on SEGA and automatic licenses says a console restart may be needed to receive the new functionality.

Support is not universal. Microsoft said “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature,” and described the rollout as starting with thousands of titles, with more to be added over time. The announcement gives no exact official total or exhaustive title list. Microsoft’s announcement is the source for those qualifications.

Windows Central reported on September 30, 2026 that the community-maintained XCT.live Disc-to-Digital Database listed 1,578 compatible games. That is a community database count reported by Windows Central, not an official Microsoft statistic, and entries may change as titles are added or corrected. Are SEGA games included?
Yes, some SEGA games have reportedly begun participating. Windows Central reported on September 29, 2026 that SEGA titles were appearing in the program, alongside earlier reported publisher participation by Ubisoft. The report does not identify a definitive list of eligible SEGA games, editions, or regions. Publisher participation is not a compatibility guarantee for every disc.

Before buying a disc specifically to claim a digital entitlement, confirm that the exact title is supported using a current, reliable title-specific compatibility resource, or check with the disc you already own. The cited sources do not establish an official, exhaustive Xbox compatibility database.
When the feature became available
Microsoft’s August 26 announcement described the feature for Xbox Insiders. Windows Central reported on September 29, 2026 that it had become available to all players after Insider testing. Xbox engineer Eden Marie, as quoted by Windows Central, said players might need to restart their console to receive the functionality. Availability and title support can change after those dated reports.
