Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told staff that the business had begun returning to growth after an “all time low.” But the public report does not identify the measure behind that claim, and Microsoft’s latest cited results show Xbox content and services revenue falling 10% year over year in the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The available figures therefore do not independently confirm a broad Xbox recovery or show that cuts caused one.

What did the Xbox CEO say?

In an October 2026 report, Windows Central said Asha Sharma made the remarks at an internal town hall. It attributed this statement to her: “We’re making the right decisions to reinvest in the business, after an all time low, we’ve started to return to growth, more than 2 to 3 times what we were, and we expect that continue.”

The report does not publish the town hall slides or supporting data. It also does not explain what “more than 2 to 3 times what we were” measures. That phrase cannot be treated as a revenue, profit, player, or subscriber growth rate without further information.

Do Microsoft’s public results show Xbox growing again?

Not on the latest cited measure. Microsoft reported that Xbox content and services revenue declined 10% year over year in FY2026 Q4, the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The category is broad: Microsoft says it includes first- and third-party content, Game Pass and other subscriptions, Xbox Cloud Gaming, advertising, and other cloud services. That decline does not prove Sharma’s statement false. Her comment may refer to a different measure, a different period, or an internal indicator that Microsoft does not report in this release. But because the public account does not specify the metric or timeframe, readers cannot reconcile the town hall claim with Microsoft’s reported revenue figure.

What earlier results add to the picture

Microsoft’s FY2026 Q2 results, for the quarter ended December 31, 2025, showed declines in both reported Xbox areas. Hardware revenue was down 32% year over year, which Microsoft attributed to lower console volume; content and services revenue was down 5%. These are earlier figures, not results for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. Microsoft reported them in its FY2026 Q2 More Personal Computing performance update.

Hardware and content and services are distinct measures. The hardware decline concerns console revenue, while the content and services category combines several types of business. Neither can be substituted for the unspecified internal measure Sharma reportedly described.

Do the reports show that cuts caused the recovery?

No. The town hall quote refers to decisions to reinvest and a return to growth after an “all time low,” but the public report provides no quantified account of cuts, no metric for the claimed growth, and no evidence linking specific cuts to that growth. The sources establish that Sharma made an attributed statement and that Microsoft reported declines in particular revenue categories; they do not establish a causal connection between restructuring and a recovery.
