Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told The New York Times that “Xbox is not for sale.” Her answer rejects the sale speculation described in coverage of the interview, but it is not a detailed plan for Xbox’s products, studios, or future structure.
What did Asha Sharma say about Xbox being sold?
GamesRadar+ reports that Sharma gave The New York Times the direct answer: “Xbox is not for sale.” Game Developer also reports the denial and attributes it to the interview. Those reports make this a clear public rejection of the sale speculation they describe; they do not establish that Microsoft had formally announced a sale process or that a transaction was pending. (GamesRadar+; Game Developer)
What did she say about Xbox’s future?
The denial was accompanied by a broader point about pursuing what is needed for success. GamesRadar+ attributes this statement to Sharma: “We will do whatever it takes to set the company up for success, and we will look at the right partnerships, the right operating model and everything needed to achieve that.” The Next Web also reports her saying, “We’ve got a long way to go with Microsoft, and we’re going to take the long-term view.” (GamesRadar+; The Next Web)
Those remarks leave room for Xbox to consider partnerships or changes to its operating model. They do not identify a specific partner, confirm a planned restructuring, or provide a product roadmap.

What the statement does—and does not—settle
The reports describe the sale question against a backdrop of speculation about a possible spin-out or other change to Microsoft’s gaming business. Speculation is not confirmation: the cited coverage does not report a completed transaction or a formally announced sale plan. GamesSchedule characterizes the interview statement as addressing sale speculation rather than laying out a detailed business, studio, or product roadmap. (GamesSchedule)
- It settles the immediate question: Sharma’s reported answer is that Xbox is not for sale.
- It does not settle every future decision: the comments do not guarantee particular products, studio arrangements, or an unchanged corporate structure.
How firmly is the quote verified?
The contemporary reports attribute the remarks to Sharma’s New York Times interview. The original profile was not accessible to the reporting cited here, so the wording and interview context are supported through those outlets’ accounts rather than a direct link to the original article. The conclusion should therefore remain limited to what those reports attribute to her.
