Würth Elektronik expanded its WL-SMTW surface-mount, single-color LED series on April 9, 2025, adding compact 1608 parts and heat-resistant 3528 HIGHTA parts. The 1608 package targets tight PCB layouts; the 3528 HIGHTA package supports operation up to 100°C and is positioned for higher light output. Both groups offer several color choices, but the exact optical and electrical specifications depend on the order code.
What changed in the WL-SMTW series?
The April 9, 2025 announcement added two package groups to the SMT-mountable, top-view WL-SMTW mono-color LED family. Würth says the LEDs use water-clear glass for color rendering and emit no UV or IR. The announcement describes the available colors as blue, green, yellow, amber and red; the 1608 additions include two red wavelength choices, 630 nm and 640 nm. How do the 1608 and 3528 HIGHTA options compare?

Choose 1608 when board area is the main constraint. Choose 3528 HIGHTA when the design needs the stated higher-temperature capability or is intended for broader illumination. Würth Elektronik Product Manager Optoelectronics Linh Do similarly describes 1608 as suited to space-constrained designs and 3528 as delivering high luminous intensity for broader illumination needs in Embedded’s coverage.
What should you verify before choosing an order code?
Package and color alone are not enough to select a part. Würth’s WL-SMTW product catalog lists variant-specific dominant wavelength, luminous intensity, forward voltage, viewing angle, CAD files and PSpice models. Catalog entries include 120° viewing-angle variants, but values differ by part; verify the exact order code’s documentation against the circuit and optical design.

For example, catalog order code 150160BS73103 is a blue variant listed with a 465 nm peak wavelength, 1000 mcd typical luminous intensity, 3.2 V typical forward voltage and a 120° viewing angle. Those values describe that example part, not every WL-SMTW LED.
- Confirm the package dimensions and height against available PCB and enclosure clearance.
- Match the color and wavelength to the required appearance or optical system; distinguish the 1608 red options at 630 nm and 640 nm.
- Check luminous intensity, forward voltage and viewing angle in the selected part’s datasheet rather than assuming they transfer across the family.
- Review the recommended PCB land pattern and assembly requirements in the part documentation before layout and production.
How hot can the LEDs operate, and what about service life?
Würth’s 2025 announcement specifies operation up to 100°C for the 3528 HIGHTA additions. That figure should not be applied to the 1608 additions or treated as a guarantee of brightness, lifetime or system performance at every temperature; use the exact datasheet’s operating limits and conditions for the selected order code.

The current product catalog identifies listed entries as active production and gives an expected lifetime above 10 years. That catalog statement is not a specified operating-life test result for every application; actual service life depends on the selected part and conditions of use.

They may be considered for such designs only subject to Würth Elektronik’s qualification and approval requirements. The datasheet says written approval through the PPAP procedure is required before incorporating the components into military, aerospace, aviation, nuclear-control, submarine, transportation, disaster-prevention, medical or public-information-network equipment where higher safety or reliability is required, or where failure could cause injury. Confirm applicability and obtain the required written approval before design-in; ordinary catalog availability is not a substitute for qualification.

Where can you buy WL-SMTW LEDs?
Würth Elektronik says the series is supplied from stock without a minimum order quantity. Availability can vary by package, color and order code, so search by the exact part number in the manufacturer’s catalog or with a component supplier and confirm stock before ordering. The stock and minimum-order statement comes from the manufacturer’s April 9, 2025 release.
