If your C: drive keeps losing space while you use WSL 2 or Docker, the cause may be a growing WSL virtual disk, Docker images, stopped containers, or another Windows file. Check which storage is growing before deleting anything: Linux free space, the Windows size of a WSL disk file, and Docker resources are different things.

Why WSL 2 can use space on your Windows drive

Each WSL 2 Linux distribution is stored in a virtual hard disk file named ext4.vhdx. The file resides on a Windows drive, so files and other data held inside the Linux distribution can contribute to the space Windows reports as used.

Microsoft says WSL automatically resizes this virtual hard disk to meet storage needs. Recent WSL releases have a default maximum virtual disk allocation of 1 TB. The earlier default was 512 GB before WSL release 0.58.0, and 256 GB before that. These are maximum allocations, not the amount of physical space the file necessarily occupies as soon as WSL is installed.

How to tell whether WSL or Docker is responsible

Start by checking whether WSL 2, Docker Desktop, or both are in use. If both are installed, do not assume Docker data and ordinary Linux files are the same growing resource. Microsoft identifies Docker images and stopped containers as items that consume storage, while WSL distributions have their own virtual disks.

Check free space inside Linux

Open the relevant WSL distribution and run:

df -h

This reports free space in the Linux filesystem. It does not tell you how large the corresponding ext4.vhdx file is on Windows. A Linux filesystem can show free space even when its host-side virtual disk file remains large.

Locate the WSL virtual disk on Windows

Microsoft documents a PowerShell registry query that retrieves a named distribution’s BasePath; append ext4.vhdx to that path to locate its virtual disk. The documented example is under %LOCALAPPDATA%Packages...LocalState, but the location depends on the distribution. Check the specific distribution rather than assuming every WSL disk is in one fixed folder.

Compare the file’s size in Windows with the Linux free-space report. They answer different questions: the first shows the host-side file’s size, while the second shows available space inside Linux.

What to inspect before deleting data

Once you identify a growing WSL distribution, inspect its contents from Linux and remove only data you recognize and no longer need. Possible places to investigate include package caches, build outputs, development environments, and personal files. These are examples to check, not a claim that any one category is usually responsible.

  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

For Docker, identify images and stopped containers that are genuinely unused. Make sure you do not need them before pruning; removal is not a way to merely hide their storage use.

Clean up unused Docker resources

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

wslc container prune
wslc image prune

Use the container command to remove stopped containers and the image command to remove unused images. Review what is no longer needed before running either command. These operations target those resources; they should not be treated as a command to remove all Docker Desktop data or as a guarantee that a Windows-hosted virtual disk file will shrink.

Why deleting files may not immediately free the same space on C:

Deleting files inside Linux and reducing the Windows-side size of a virtual hard disk are separate tasks. A file can be removed from the guest filesystem without the host-side ext4.vhdx file shrinking by the same amount. Do not delete or modify the VHDX directly while WSL is using it: Microsoft’s disk guidance requires shutting WSL down before direct VHD interaction.

wsl --shutdown stops running WSL instances; it is a safety step before applicable direct disk work, not a cleanup command. WSL disk-management options also depend on the installed WSL version. Microsoft says wsl --manage resize operations require WSL 2.5 or later, and its documented resize example expands virtual disk size—it is not a general compaction procedure.

Docker Desktop storage needs its own version-specific guidance

Do not infer Docker Desktop’s current WSL 2 disk-image location or a safe relocation or compaction procedure from guidance for a different Docker configuration. The Microsoft Windows Docker troubleshooting article’s image-folder discussion applies to its described Docker setup and does not establish the current Docker Desktop WSL 2 path. Check documentation for the Docker Desktop version and storage configuration you actually use before moving or manipulating its data.

A safe troubleshooting order

  1. Identify the growing resource. Determine whether the issue is a WSL distribution, Docker images or stopped containers, or another Windows file.
  2. For WSL, compare both views. Use df -h inside the relevant distribution, then locate that distribution’s ext4.vhdx on Windows using its documented BasePath.
  3. Inspect before removing. Find data you recognize inside Linux; for Docker, identify images and stopped containers you no longer need.
  4. Use the matching cleanup action. Remove unneeded Linux data or use the Docker prune commands for their specific resource types.
  5. Do not manipulate an active virtual disk. Shut WSL down before direct VHD interaction, and use instructions appropriate to your installed WSL or Docker Desktop version.
