Social-media feeds can make writing feel like a performance when visibility, likes, and replies become the signals writers learn to chase. That is a credible concern, not a proven universal decline in writing quality: there is no direct evidence here that ranked feeds made writing worse overall. You can still reclaim more control by following writers directly, choosing feeds whose rules you understand, and drafting somewhere public metrics do not shape the work.
What “quiet web” means—and what is actually known
The quiet web is a useful name for a looser collection of personal blogs, RSS feeds, wikis, archives, static sites, and lower-pressure online spaces. These places are not automatically private, untracked, or free of ranking; their features depend on how each site is built. What distinguishes them is that they can let readers reach writing without depending entirely on a fast-moving social feed.
The argument that social media has “ruined writing” is stronger than the evidence supports. Public metrics and engagement incentives plausibly encourage some writers to shape posts for reaction or visibility rather than to think something through or communicate it plainly. But there is no controlled comparison establishing a general decline in writing quality caused by ranked feeds. Treat the phrase as a critique of incentives and experience, not a settled causal finding.
It also helps to separate two questions: how a platform decides what appears, and what that system encourages people to do. “Algorithmic” can describe a simple reverse-chronological list or a personalized ranking system. Bluesky CEO Jay Graber put the distinction this way in a March 30, 2023 post: “The problem isn’t ‘algorithms’ — the problem is a lack of transparency and control around how algorithms are used to direct your attention.” That is the platform’s view, not independent evidence of effects, but it captures the practical issue: who chooses what you see, by what rules, and can you change them? Why social writing can start to feel performative
A public post can serve two purposes at once: saying something and seeking a response. When likes, comments, shares, or reach are prominent, those measures can become a visible proxy for whether a piece “worked.” A writer may then feel pressure to make a thought more immediate, provocative, frequent, or easily reacted to. This is a plausible account of the pressure some people describe; it should not be mistaken for proof that every writer or platform behaves this way.
There is evidence that sudden visibility can change the experience of a community, though not that it lowers writing quality. A GroupLens 2024 study examined 6,306 posts across 1,320 subreddits. Compared with posts from the same communities that did not reach Reddit’s r/popular, posts that did averaged 45 times as many comments, 42 times as many removed comments, and 70 times as many newcomers. The median comment rate peaked 85% higher, with effects lingering for about 12 hours. These results concern community activity and moderation after an attention spike—not the quality of the writing or a general effect of algorithms. GroupLens’s study of popular Reddit posts

Other research should not be stretched to fill that gap. A 2025 study in Frontiers in Psychology used interviews with young people, analysis of more than 1,000 social-media videos, and discussions with school leaders to examine exposure to gender-based violence and misogyny and its implications for wellbeing. It does not establish that algorithms reduce writing quality. The study in Frontiers in Psychology

Subscribe directly with RSS
RSS lets you subscribe to a site’s published updates through a feed reader. Tim Berners-Lee describes a feed as “a sequence of published things such that you can subscribe to” on a W3C Design Issues page. The page is a personal view and first draft, rather than a formal W3C standard, but the definition captures the basic idea: publishers provide updates, and readers choose which sources to follow. This shifts source selection toward you. You decide which writers or sites to add, and a reader can bring their updates together for deliberate browsing. The trade-off is that you must discover and organize sources yourself; subscriptions do not automatically filter out everything you would rather not read.
Visit independent sites and archives
Bookmark writers’ own sites, blogs, wikis, and archives, and visit them when you want to read rather than waiting for a platform to surface their work. These are alternative routes to writing, not a guarantee of a particular privacy policy or presentation. Each site may still use analytics, recommendations, or other forms of curation.

Choose a chronological feed when legibility matters
A chronological feed makes the ordering rule easier to understand: posts are presented by time rather than selected for predicted relevance. It does not mean there is no algorithm—the ordering still follows a rule—and it will not solve overload if you follow more sources than you can comfortably read. Bluesky itself describes chronological following as one possible feed, not as the absence of algorithms. Bluesky’s explanation of chronological feeds

Use selectable feeds with care
Custom feeds can let you choose a topic, network, or other selection criteria instead of accepting one default stream. Bluesky describes feeds as selectable and open to third-party creation, but a custom feed is still curated: its results depend on who made it and the rules it applies. Review what a feed is intended to show and switch away if it does not suit you. Bluesky’s post on custom feeds

If public response is distorting what you want to say, separate drafting from distribution. Write first in a private document, notebook, or space with fewer visible feedback signals; decide later whether, where, and how to publish. This is a practical design choice, not a clinically proven intervention. It can give a thought room to develop before likes or reach enter the picture.
- Choose the purpose of a piece before drafting: thinking something through, explaining it, entertaining, or inviting discussion are different aims.
- Draft outside the feed when you want to explore an idea without responding to immediate public feedback.
- Publish selectively. Not every useful thought needs to become a public post, and not every post needs to be optimized for reach.
- When choosing where to publish, consider whether public engagement metrics are central to the experience and whether you can control how you encounter them.
Which approach fits your reading and writing habits?
| Approach | Who selects what appears? | Ordering or selection | Control and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| RSS subscriptions | You select the publishers you follow. | Updates arrive through feeds; the reader’s display and sorting depend on the tool. | Direct subscriptions reduce dependence on social discovery, but finding and organizing sources is your responsibility. W3C Design Issues |
| Independent sites and archives | You choose which sites to visit. | Depends on each site; no universal ordering rule is established. | Direct visits bypass a social feed for discovery, but site features and privacy practices vary. |
| Chronological social feed | The platform or feed provider presents posts from accounts you follow. | Time-based ordering rather than personalized relevance ranking. | The order is easier to interpret, but volume can still overwhelm. Bluesky |
| Selectable or custom feed | The user chooses a feed; its creator or service defines the selection rules. | Can be organized around different criteria; the rules vary by feed. | Offers choice, but does not make curation disappear. Bluesky |
| Private or low-pressure drafting | The writer chooses the space and whether to publish. | No public-feed ordering during drafting. | Reduces immediate exposure to public metrics while writing, but does not itself provide an audience or distribution. |
A practical way to start
- Pick a small set of writers and sites you already value, then look for their own websites or RSS feeds.
- Add those sources to a feed reader or bookmark them for direct visits. Keep the list small enough to browse without turning reading into another obligation.
- On social platforms that offer multiple feeds, try a chronological or clearly described user-selected option. Check whether you can switch feeds and whether the selection rules are understandable.
- Draft an idea somewhere separate from public posting. Publish it only after deciding that a public conversation is actually what you want.
The aim is not to eliminate every ranking system. It is to make attention less dependent on a single opaque stream and to give reading and writing more room to follow your own purposes.
