Write Together is a writing community with a personal writing space, not a team word processor, so the best alternative depends on what you need to do: build a daily writing habit, edit a shared document, organize project notes, or co-write a manuscript. For most readers, the closest replacement is a tool built for the same job, not a single app that copies Write Together’s feature set.
What Write Together is positioned to do
Product Hunt describes Write Together as “a community of writers taking the time to write a few words down as often as they can,” and says users can “get your own space to write.” The listing uses the tagline “Let’s write, together. Not alone.” It records a 2019 launch and places the product in social/community, community management, and writing assistant categories (Product Hunt listing, accessed October 7, 2026).
That positioning matters for choosing an alternative. Write Together is framed around showing up to write alongside other people. It is not presented as a tool for real-time editing of a shared file, reviewing a draft with a permissions model, or producing a finished book. Four different jobs behind the word “alternative”
People searching for a Write Together alternative usually want one of four things. Pick the job first, then the tool.
- A writing routine with accountability. You want a prompt, a streak, or a community that keeps you writing.
- Shared editing of a document. You need collaborators to comment, suggest changes, or edit a file together.
- Project knowledge. Your writing sits alongside research notes, outlines, wikis, and task tracking.

For separate co-writer drafts: Ellipsus
Reedsy’s comparison of writing tools, posted May 25, 2026, describes Ellipsus as a tool where collaborators work on separate copies of a draft and compare them side by side, with chat tied to each draft. This is a specific workflow distinction from a secondary source. Reedsy is one of the tools in that comparison, and Ellipsus’s current feature set should be checked on the vendor’s site before you rely on it.

Checks before you switch
- Permissions. If collaborators should only comment, confirm the tool offers a commenter-only role. Google Docs documents one; check others before assuming they do.
- Export. If you need an EPUB or print-ready PDF, confirm the export option in the tool itself. Reedsy Studio lists those formats; the other tools in this article are not described with book export in the sources reviewed.
- Onboarding. Test whether each collaborator needs an account and how long that takes. The sources reviewed do not establish this for most tools.
