Wristify was a 2013 MIT student prototype: a battery-powered bracelet that used hot or cold pulses at the wrist to change how warm or cool a person felt. Its energy-saving idea was to make people more comfortable without changing a building’s thermostat. MIT reported prototype performance and a team estimate for one building scenario, but neither establishes verified U.S.-wide savings or shows that a wristband can replace air conditioning.
What was Wristify?
Wristify was a thermoelectric bracelet developed by MIT students. It monitored skin and air temperature, then delivered tailored heating or cooling pulses to the wearer’s wrist. The team won the $10,000 first prize at MIT’s 2013 Making And Designing Materials Engineering Competition (MADMEC).
The prototype combined temperature sensors, automated controls, a thermoelectric component and a custom copper-alloy heat sink. Its controls adjusted pulse intensity and duration in response to temperature readings.

The concept relies on localized thermal stimulation: the team treated the wrist as a particularly thermally sensitive place to apply a small, rapid temperature change. The goal was to influence a person’s overall feeling of warmth or coolness without heating or cooling the entire room. MIT’s account describes prototype engineering findings, not a large independent field trial showing that this effect works reliably for everyone or in every setting.

These figures describe the Wristify prototype as MIT reported it. They do not establish performance for the later Embr Wave product or for thermoelectric wrist coolers as a category.
Could Wristify save energy or replace air conditioning?
Wristify’s design goal was to condition the person rather than the entire building: if occupants felt comfortable, a building might need less heating or cooling. That is a plausible energy-saving strategy, but the available figures are estimates for specific scenarios, not measured national results.

What MIT’s energy numbers do—and do not—show
- MIT quoted co-inventor Sam Shames in 2013 attributing 16.5% of U.S. primary energy consumption to space heating and cooling. This is the figure reported in MIT’s account, not a measurement of energy Wristify saved.
- MIT also reported the team’s estimate that a building could save roughly 100 kilowatt-hours per month if it avoided a 1 °C thermostat adjustment. That is a team estimate for a hypothetical building scenario, not an observed saving or a national total.
The estimate does not show that a wristband can reliably persuade occupants to accept a different thermostat setting, how many people would need to wear one, or how the building’s heating and cooling systems would respond. No evidence cited here establishes that Wristify or Embr Wave can replace whole-building air conditioning or deliver millions of dollars in verified U.S. energy savings.

What are the practical limits of a Peltier wrist cooler?
Thermoelectric devices can move heat, but they need electrical power both to pump heat and to reject it elsewhere. A later wearable-cooling patent describes Peltier elements as having high energy requirements, short operating times and comparatively long charging times; it also notes that close skin contact can be uncomfortable. Those are category-level engineering cautions, not a test of every wrist cooler.

Heat rejection matters as much as the cooling surface. A device that draws heat from the skin must dispose of it through a heat sink or another design feature; performance and comfort therefore depend on the complete device, not just its thermoelectric tile. A prototype’s maximum cooling rate alone does not establish comfortable all-day use or practical battery life.
When comparing a thermoelectric wristband with another, useful evidence includes cooling and heating rates under stated conditions, runtime, heat-sink design, skin-contact comfort, controls, charging time, weight, warranty and independently documented performance. The supplied figures for Wristify do not establish all of those measures.

Is Wristify the same product as Embr Wave?
They are related, but the names refer to different stages. MIT’s commercialization account says the Wristify wristband became Embr Wave. MIT described the later design as a personal thermostat wearable, with a flat aluminum top, a blue-to-red display and a thermoelectric tile that touched the skin, and said it was planned for commercial release. The account does not make the 2013 prototype’s specifications a guarantee of Embr Wave’s performance.

Can you buy an Embr Wave wristband on Amazon?
Current Amazon or other retailer availability is not established here. MIT’s account described Embr Wave as planned for commercial release, but that historical statement does not confirm present-day stock, seller legitimacy, warranty terms or support. Check current retailer listings and the manufacturer’s own information before relying on a listing or assuming that a product is the same as the MIT prototype.
