For a home Wi-Fi network, choose WPA3 Personal if your router and the devices you need to connect support it. If older devices need to stay online, use WPA2/WPA3 Transitional. If neither option is available, choose WPA2 Personal (AES). Avoid WEP, WPA Personal, WPA/WPA2 mixed modes, and TKIP.
Which Wi-Fi security setting should you choose?
Use the strongest mode your router and important devices can all use. Apple’s router guidance recommends WPA3 Personal for better security, or WPA2/WPA3 Transitional when compatibility with older devices is needed. WPA2 Personal (AES) is the fallback when those modes are unavailable or cannot be used.
| Setting | When to use it | Compatibility and security |
|---|---|---|
| WPA3 Personal | Use when the router and relevant client devices support it. | Apple’s preferred home-network option for better security; older clients that do not support WPA3 may not connect. |
| WPA2/WPA3 Transitional | Use when older devices must remain connected. | WPA3-capable devices use WPA3 Personal; older devices can use WPA2 Personal (AES), according to Apple. |
| WPA2 Personal (AES) | Use if WPA3 Personal and Transitional mode are unavailable or incompatible. | Fallback choice; select AES if the router presents a separate cipher setting. |
| WPA Personal, WPA/WPA2 mixed modes, WEP, or TKIP | Do not use as a normal fallback. | Apple identifies these as weak, deprecated, or no longer secure options. |
These labels and available choices vary by router model and firmware. Check the router’s documentation and the documentation for your client devices rather than assuming every device supports the same modes. Apple states: “Set to WPA3 Personal for better security, or set to WPA2/WPA3 Transitional for compatibility with older devices.” (Apple Support, Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points, published June 3, 2026.)

What do WPA3, WPA2, AES, and TKIP mean?
WPA3 and WPA2 are security protocol generations
WPA3 and WPA2 are Wi-Fi security protocols that authenticate connections and use encryption to protect data sent over the air. Apple Platform Security describes WPA2 and WPA3 as using 128-bit AES encryption for this protection (Apple Platform Security, Security features when connecting to wireless networks, 2024).
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
AES is an encryption algorithm, not a WPA generation
AES names the cipher used to encrypt data; it is not a separate generation of Wi-Fi security. If your router offers WPA2 Personal and a separate cipher choice, Apple recommends AES.
TKIP and older modes should be avoided
TKIP is an older security component. Apple lists TKIP settings alongside weak or deprecated options to avoid. The same guidance rules out WEP, WPA Personal, and WPA/WPA2 mixed modes as normal choices.

- Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6 Technology – The Archer AX10 leverages advanced Wi-Fi 6 features like OFDMA and 1024-QAM to deliver improved efficiency across your entire network. Perfect for high-bandwidth activities like streaming, gaming, and smart home connectivity.
- Next-gen Dual Band router - 300 Mbps on 2. 4 GHz (802. 11n) plus 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz (802. 11ax)
- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
What if older devices will not connect?
Try WPA2/WPA3 Transitional if your router offers it. It allows compatible devices to use WPA3 Personal while older clients use WPA2 Personal (AES). If a device still cannot connect, consult its documentation and the router maker’s compatibility guidance; the available mode depends on the specific router, firmware, and client.

Do not switch to WEP, WPA Personal, or TKIP just to bring an unsupported device online. If Transitional mode is unavailable, use WPA2 Personal (AES) only when necessary, or consider whether the incompatible device should remain on the network.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to change the router’s security setting
- Open the router manufacturer’s configuration app or webpage and sign in with an administrator account.
- Find the Wi-Fi or wireless security settings. The exact menu name and available modes depend on the router and its firmware.
- Choose WPA3 Personal, WPA2/WPA3 Transitional, or WPA2 Personal (AES), following the compatibility guidance above. Apply the intended setting consistently across the router’s access points and bands.
- Save the change. Some devices may need to forget the saved Wi-Fi network and rejoin it using the network password.
- If a device cannot reconnect, check the router and device documentation for supported security modes. Keep the router firmware current.
Changing the protocol does not make a weak Wi-Fi password strong or fix an unpatched router. Use a strong network password and install current router firmware, as Apple recommends. If an Apple device warns that a network has weak security and you do not administer the router, ask the network administrator to review its settings against Apple’s guidance.
