A new Uncharted game would feel like a retread if it repeated the series’ familiar action and treasure-hunt formula without giving players a fresh character perspective or a meaningful new way to engage with its challenges. But Naughty Dog has not officially announced a new Uncharted game, so there are no confirmed creative details to judge yet. The key is not to abandon the series’ identity; it is to make its next adventure reveal something genuinely new.
Is Naughty Dog making a new Uncharted game?
Not officially, according to the studio’s public announcements. Naughty Dog’s website identifies Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as its next game, in development for PS5. In the December 2024 announcement, studio head Neil Druckmann wrote, “Naughty Dog’s next game is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, currently in development for the PlayStation 5 console.” Naughty Dog’s announcement also described it as a new franchise.
A possible Uncharted project is the subject of reporting, not an official reveal. GamesRadar reported on October 1, 2026, that MP1st, citing sources, described an all-new Uncharted project rather than a remake. The report alleges Shaun Escayg is leading it and that Nathan Drake is involved in some capacity; GamesRadar also said leaker NateTheHate corroborated the Uncharted identification. Drake’s role, the project’s premise, platform, release timing and even its official status have not been confirmed by Naughty Dog. GamesRadar’s account should therefore be read as a report about an alleged project, not a game announcement.

Naughty Dog’s September 28, 2026 studio update discussed two very early-stage projects expanding The Last of Us canon and said Intergalactic would receive a full reveal in 2027. It did not identify the early-stage projects as Uncharted, so the update does not confirm the rumor. The studio update is the clearest official context available.

What would make a new Uncharted feel like a retread?
PlayStation describes Uncharted as cinematic action-adventure built around historical mysteries, travel through varied environments, elaborate action set pieces, treasure hunts and formidable rivals. Those ingredients are the series’ recognizable promise. Repeating them is not automatically a problem: familiarity is part of what makes a series recognizable. The risk is repeating them without a fresh point of view, a distinctive setting or gameplay that gives players new decisions to make.
That distinction matters because a new location alone may not be enough. A different country can still feel interchangeable if the mystery, character journey and encounters all serve the same beats. Likewise, more spectacular chases or bigger fights may resemble escalation rather than evolution if players solve them in the same way. These are criteria for judging a future game, not confirmed details about the reported project.

The one thing Naughty Dog should avoid: repeating the formula without changing what it means
The studio should avoid treating Uncharted’s familiar set pieces as a substitute for a new reason to go on an adventure. A fresh installment can keep treasure hunting, danger and cinematic momentum while changing what the player learns about its characters and world—and how they navigate the challenges. No specific protagonist, era or gameplay feature can yet be named as the answer; there is no official premise to evaluate.

There is precedent for the series changing its perspective. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End follows Nathan Drake after retirement, when his brother Sam’s return draws him back into exploration. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy shifts the lead to Chloe Frazer, with Nadine Ross, for a journey in India’s Western Ghats. The franchise has therefore already shown that its identity does not depend on one permanent lead or one stage of Drake’s life. A new game need not repeat either approach; it needs a character perspective that makes this particular journey matter.

Judge a future game on three questions
- Who is the story about? Does the protagonist’s perspective extend a meaningful character arc or open a compelling new one?
- What is worth discovering? Does the mystery and setting contribute a distinct historical or cultural context, rather than functioning as scenery for familiar action?
- What can the player do differently? Do traversal, combat and set pieces create new decisions, or do they merely repeat recognizable spectacle?
These questions separate healthy continuity from a stale retread without prescribing a specific character or setting before Naughty Dog reveals one.
Why a remake is a different question
The current report, as GamesRadar describes it, is about an all-new project rather than a remake. That distinction matters: a new story can add to the series, while a remake asks whether revisiting an existing story improves on or changes the original.

Former Uncharted designer Benson Russell, in a statement quoted by GamesRadar about remaking Drake’s Fortune, said: “You’d have to rewrite the whole story to make it better which means you’re going to change the spirit and you’re going to change the scenes and what the first one was about, right?” That is Russell’s view of a potential remake, not a Naughty Dog statement and not a comment on the reported new project. It highlights why “new game” and “remake” should not be treated as interchangeable claims.

The original game itself was not mechanically fixed from the outset. In Naughty Dog’s Drake’s Fortune 15th-anniversary retrospective, president Evan Wells recalled: “It’s hard to believe how late in the development we decided to switch to a third-person aiming mechanic for the gunplay.” That historical note does not predict the design of a future Uncharted, but it is a reminder that the series’ identity emerged alongside creative decisions—not from preserving every early assumption unchanged. Naughty Dog’s retrospective provides that context.

What to play while waiting for official details
There is no confirmed new Uncharted game to buy or play. For a current PS5 revisit, PlayStation lists Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which includes the single-player stories of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. It is an existing collection, not the rumored project. PlayStation’s franchise page describes both included adventures.
