China’s CETROVO 1.0 Carbon Star Express began carrying passengers on Qingdao Metro Line 1 on January 10, 2025. Developed by CRRC Qingdao Sifang and Qingdao Metro Group, it uses carbon-fiber composites in major load-bearing structures, including the car body and bogies. CRRC reports that the lighter train uses less energy and is designed to reduce vibration, but the published figures are manufacturer claims rather than independently audited results.
What “world’s first” means in this case
CRRC Corporation Limited described CETROVO 1.0 as the first subway train to use carbon-fiber composites in its primary load-bearing structures for commercial passenger service. The qualification matters: this is not a claim that no carbon-fiber rail vehicle of any kind had existed before. The train’s passenger service began on Qingdao Metro Line 1 on January 10, 2025, making it more than a prototype or a planned demonstration.
CRRC’s January 2025 report says the composites are used structurally—in the body, bogies and other primary load-bearing parts—rather than only as trim or interior decoration. Conventional subway vehicles commonly rely on steel and aluminum alloys for such structures.
How much lighter and more efficient does CRRC say it is?
CRRC Corporation Limited reported the following comparisons in 2025 against traditional metal-based vehicles:

The component figures are not interchangeable with the whole-train figure: the body and bogies are only parts of the complete vehicle. CRRC’s published pages do not provide a detailed mass breakdown, test protocol, operating conditions, uncertainty range or independent audit for these comparisons. The energy and emissions values should therefore be read as manufacturer-reported outcomes, not as independently verified results or a universal saving for every route.
What the train changes for passengers
CRRC says the lighter structure and vibration-isolation design help the train run more smoothly and improve ride comfort. That is an engineering claim, not a result from a passenger survey or an independent vibration study in the cited material.

The manufacturer also describes active control for curve running and reports 15 dB lower curve-passing noise on its 2025 product page. The source does not provide an independent acoustic test report or enough measurement detail to establish how that figure would translate into perceived noise in every operating environment. It is best understood as a product specification reported by CRRC Qingdao Sifang.

Fault detection
CRRC Qingdao Sifang says the train’s self-detection and diagnosis system covers 36 fault modes and responds at millisecond-level speed. These are manufacturer-stated system specifications; the cited product information does not describe an independent validation.

Digital-twin maintenance
CRRC describes its SmartCare intelligent maintenance platform as using digital-twin technology. New Atlas reported a 22% reduction in maintenance costs, but that figure is not confirmed in the reviewed CRRC English product and service pages, so it should not be treated as an established performance result.

The key milestone is clear: CETROVO 1.0 entered commercial passenger service, and carbon-fiber composites form part of its primary load-bearing structure. The available manufacturer reporting also supplies specific weight, energy, emissions, noise and diagnostic figures. It does not establish an independent comparison with other subway fleets, a controlled lifecycle-cost analysis, or passenger-rated comfort outcomes.

For a rigorous comparison with another rail vehicle, useful criteria would include which structures use composites, weight change at both component and whole-train level, energy under comparable duty cycles, independently measured noise and vibration, maintenance over a defined service life, and safety and durability evidence. The published figures here do not constitute that cross-model assessment.
