Jannik Sinner withdrew from the 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters on 3 October as he continued recovering from a knee injury. The world No. 1 has not played since winning Wimbledon in July, and no diagnosis or return date was given in the reports announcing his withdrawal.
Why did Sinner withdraw from Shanghai?
Sinner said he would not be able to play in Shanghai while continuing his recovery. In an Instagram Stories message reproduced by the official tournament report on 3 October 2026, he wrote: “Unfortunately I won’t be able to play at the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year as I had hoped.” He added that he was sorry to miss the Shanghai fans and looked forward to seeing them next year.
His last event was Wimbledon, which he won in July. The tournament report said the knee injury had also kept him out of the North American hard-court swing, including the US Open, and the ATP 500 event in Beijing.

The USTA’s 21 August 2026 US Open report specified that Sinner’s issue affected his right knee. It reproduced his statement that, after working with his team and medical staff and returning to court in Monte Carlo, he still needed more time to recover from the right-knee issue.

The reports do not identify a more specific diagnosis, describe treatment, or give a prognosis or date for his return. Sinner’s 2026 record was 44–3 at the time, according to both the tournament report’s citation of the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index and the USTA report; that record does not establish the severity or expected duration of the injury.
When is the 2026 Shanghai Masters?
The Rolex Shanghai Masters is scheduled for 7–18 October 2026. Sinner won the 2024 title, beating Novak Djokovic in the final. His withdrawal removes that former champion from a field that the tournament report named as including Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and defending champion Valentin Vacherot. The entry list can change.

Could Zverev become world No. 1?
Reuters reported on 3 October that Sinner’s absence could help Alexander Zverev’s bid to finish the year as No. 1. In the scenario Reuters described, Zverev could move to the top if he won both the China Open in Beijing and Shanghai. That was a conditional possibility, not a complete ranking-points calculation or a guarantee that he would take the year-end ranking.
