Businesses adopting AI agents need more than individual employees prompting a chatbot: they need shared context, visible agent identities, coordinated work, governance and human accountability. Atlassian describes this shift as “multiplayer” collaboration, but the available sources do not verify the specific claim attributed to CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes that agents will not replace human workers anytime soon.

What does “multiplayer” AI work mean?

In a solo setup, one person asks an AI assistant for help and uses the result privately. In a multiplayer workflow, agents and people contribute to work the team can see, coordinate and review. That can include assigning a task to an agent, tracking its progress alongside human work, and making its actions available for review.

Atlassian president Anu Bharadwaj described the idea in a July 9, 2025 VentureBeat report: “Fundamentally, what is teamwork all about?” She answered, “It’s multiplayer collaboration — multiple agents and multiple humans working together.” This is Bharadwaj’s framing, not a verified quote from Cannon-Brookes.

What does a business need for agentic AI?

Atlassian’s Agentic Multiplayer Protocol presents a design framework rather than a neutral evaluation of AI platforms. Its core requirements are:

  • Shared context: Agents need relevant team and project information, not just the prompt supplied by one employee.
  • Visible identity and presence: People should be able to tell which agent is involved and what it is doing.
  • Synchronous and asynchronous coordination: People and agents may need to collaborate in real time or hand work off for completion later.
  • Governance and traceability: Teams need to understand and audit agent actions, with appropriate controls over what agents can do.
  • Human accountability: Atlassian’s protocol states, “Humans must play the pivotal role in transparency, accountability, and judgment.”

These are operating principles, not proof that adopting agents will improve productivity or that every organization needs Atlassian’s products.

How Atlassian says it is making work visible

In a May 6, 2026 company update, Atlassian said teams can use Jira to assign and track work for Rovo and third-party coding agents. The company describes agent interactions as auditable, traceable and governed. That is Atlassian’s account of its product approach, not an independent assessment of how well it works in practice.

Atlassian also reported a sevenfold increase in agentic automations across its customers over the six months before that update. It said Rovo was used by 75% of Fortune 500 companies and more than 90% of its enterprise customers, and reported more than 14 million Rovo-assisted actions in the prior month. These are company-reported figures; the update passage does not provide methodology or independent validation.

Does this mean agents will not replace human workers?

That conclusion is not established by the sources cited here. The specific interview or article behind the supplied headline was not identified, so Cannon-Brookes’s alleged position should not be treated as a verified quote or forecast. Atlassian’s framework instead describes how humans and agents might work together, with people retaining responsibility for judgment and accountability. It does not establish what agent adoption will mean for jobs across the economy.

What leaders should take from the shift

The practical change is organizational: once agents perform work within a team, businesses must decide how that work is assigned, surfaced, checked and governed. A useful evaluation starts with the workflow rather than the AI label:

  1. Identify work where an agent can contribute and specify who owns the outcome.
  2. Make the agent’s identity, task and status visible to the people coordinating the work.
  3. Provide relevant shared context while limiting access and actions to what the task requires.
  4. Keep activity traceable so the team can review what happened and correct errors.
  5. Define where a person must exercise judgment or approve consequential actions.

Jira and Rovo are examples of Atlassian’s approach to these needs, not a universal prescription. The sources describe a company strategy and reported usage; they do not quantify business outcomes or show that one platform is necessary for multiplayer AI work.
