Use QColorDialog.getColor() for a straightforward modal color picker, and check the returned QColor with isValid() before applying it. If you need a live preview, transparency, or custom dialog behavior, create a QColorDialog instance and configure it before showing it.
Open a modal color picker with getColor()
Qt’s QColorDialog is a dialog for specifying colors. Its static getColor() function opens a modal picker and returns a QColor. Supply an initial color, parent widget, title, and—if needed—dialog options:
from PyQt6.QtGui import QColor
from PyQt6.QtWidgets import QColorDialog
color = QColorDialog.getColor(
QColor("green"),
parent_widget,
"Select Color",
)
if color.isValid():
apply_color(color)
Cancellation returns an invalid color, so the validity check is essential: without it, application code may treat a canceled choice as a real color. The official Qt for Python standard-dialog example follows this pattern, checking the result before updating a label’s text and palette. That example is for PySide6; its workflow illustrates Qt behavior, but its binding-specific enum syntax should not be copied blindly into PyQt6.
The snippet shows the Qt API flow rather than a tested PyQt6 execution. Verify import paths and option syntax against the PyQt6 version installed in your project.
#1 Best Overall

- ENHANCE WORKFLOW EFFICIENCY - Projector Calibration feature allows for accurate color representation during presentations, while Display Analysis/MQA provides comprehensive screen quality assessment. Export 3D LUTs (.cube) for compatible video monitors, with support for Rec.709, Rec.2020, and DCI-P3.
- WIDE DEVICE COMPATIBILITY - Supports unlimited number of displays (per computer capability) and offers native USB-C connection plus an included USB-A adapter, ensuring seamless connectivity with modern laptops and desktop computers for streamlined use. StudioMatch and SpyderTune keep color consistent across multi-monitor setups.
- USER-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE - Features an intuitive interface supporting 10 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Japanese, making calibration accessible to a global audience. Existing SpyderPro users upgrade to the new software free.
Choose between a convenience call and a dialog instance
Use getColor() when you need a modal picker and only need its result after the dialog closes. Create a QColorDialog instance when you want to connect signals, configure options, or respond to color changes while the dialog is open. Qt documents both the static modal functions and the instance API in its QColorDialog reference.
Handle live preview and confirmation differently
The current color during editing is not necessarily the color the user ultimately confirms. Connect the signal that matches when your application should act:
currentColorChangedreports changes as the dialog’s current color changes. Use it for a temporary preview, such as updating a sample background while the user explores choices.colorSelectedreports the color after the user confirms. Use it when changes should be committed only after confirmation.
For a live preview that must be undone if the user cancels, keep the previous application value and restore it when the dialog is rejected. This separates temporary visual feedback from the committed setting.

- EASY SETUP: Guided 1 2 3 workflow makes calibration fast and approachable, helping photographers and creators achieve more accurate color without complicated settings, so you can edit with confidence and trust what you see on screen.
- COLOR ACCURACY: Corrects common monitor color shifts to deliver truer tones and more reliable contrast, improving consistency across editing sessions and helping your images look closer to final output on other screens and devices.
- DUAL DISPLAY SUPPORT: Calibrates up to 2 monitors for matching color across a multi screen workspace, ideal for photo editing, video work, and creative setups where consistent viewing on both displays matters.
- BEFORE AFTER CHECK: Built in comparison view lets you instantly see the difference after calibration, making it easy to confirm improved accuracy and maintain consistent results by repeating the process on a regular schedule.
Enable alpha selection when transparency matters
By default, the dialog need not expose alpha selection. Add the ShowAlphaChannel option when users must choose transparency as well as a color. For example, in PyQt6 versions exposing the Qt 6 enum through QColorDialog.ColorDialogOption, the call can be written as:
from PyQt6.QtWidgets import QColorDialog
from PyQt6.QtGui import QColor
options = QColorDialog.ColorDialogOption.ShowAlphaChannel
color = QColorDialog.getColor(
QColor("green"),
parent_widget,
"Select Color",
options,
)
if color.isValid():
apply_color(color)
Enum exposure can vary with the PyQt6 and Qt versions in use; check the installed binding’s documentation if this spelling is unavailable.
Configure buttons and dialog appearance
Use NoButtons for a live dialog
The NoButtons option removes the OK and Cancel buttons. Qt documents it as useful for “live dialogs,” where changes take effect as the user edits rather than after a conventional confirmation step. Decide how the dialog closes and whether intermediate changes should persist before using this mode.

Choose native or Qt-standard presentation
By default, Qt may use the operating system’s native dialog. Set DontUseNativeDialog to request Qt’s standard dialog instead. Platform implementations can differ, so avoid relying on a particular appearance or behavior unless you control the dialog implementation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Set options before showing the dialog. Qt notes that changing them while the dialog is visible is not guaranteed to take effect immediately, and the result may depend on the platform.
Account for custom colors on macOS
Custom colors are shared among color dialogs during the program’s execution. On macOS, setCustomColor() and setStandardColor() do not apply to the native dialog; use DontUseNativeDialog when those settings need to take effect.

Check Qt and PyQt6 version support
The options and signal behavior described here are from the Qt 6.12 API reference. Qt documents NoEyeDropperButton, which hides the eyedropper button, as added in Qt 6.6. Its availability in a PyQt6 application depends on the Qt version bundled with that installation and how the binding exposes the option. Check the versions in your environment before relying on it.
Qt’s Python example and Python API page are for PySide6 rather than PyQt6. The underlying Qt workflow applies, but exact PyQt6 imports and enum spellings should be verified for the project’s installed version.
