WordPress developer pricing in 2026 ranges widely: Upwork lists marketplace rates of $15–$40+ per hour, while a separate regional benchmark puts its US freelancer median at $105 per hour. Those figures describe different populations and methods, not one universal market rate. Your likely cost depends on location, provider type, experience, and—above all—the work included.

What do WordPress developers charge per hour?

Published figures are useful starting points, not interchangeable quotes. The rates below are in US dollars; each source measures or models something different.

Marketplace listings

Upwork says WordPress developers on its marketplace charge $15–$40+ an hour. Its guide does not state a measurement period, so treat this as a marketplace reference rather than a comprehensive or time-specific average. Upwork also notes that fixed-price work is common and depends on requirements and customization. See Upwork’s WordPress developer cost guide.

Regional mid-level benchmark

Project Cost Estimator’s rate database, versioned 2026-07-16, labels its figures blended mid-level benchmarks. Its medians are informed by public benchmarks and project quotes, not tracked invoices or a survey of its own clients; the source says it covers 12 platforms and six regions and has no junior-to-senior breakdown.

Region Freelancer median Agency median
South / Southeast Asia $25/hour $49/hour
Eastern Europe $42/hour $82/hour
Western Europe $82/hour $140/hour
United Kingdom $90/hour $165/hour
Australia $90/hour $165/hour
United States $105/hour $185/hour

These are regional benchmark medians, not guarantees that a particular freelancer or agency will quote those amounts. The same database gives freelancer low–high ranges of $12–$47 in South/Southeast Asia and $65–$175 in the United States; its agency ranges are $28–$85 and $120–$290, respectively. US rates by engagement and experience

Second Talent’s US hiring-cost model, verified 2026-09-23, distinguishes provider type and experience. “In-house employee cost” is a modeled cost to hire, not necessarily the employee’s take-home pay. Agency rates are for an agency or development shop, not an individual developer’s compensation.

US engagement model Junior Mid-level Senior
Freelance or contract $49–$77/hour $62–$100/hour $80–$127/hour
In-house employee cost $55–$85/hour $70–$110/hour $90–$140/hour
Agency or development shop $95–$160/hour $120–$205/hour $155–$260/hour

Second Talent derives these figures from stated compensation and engagement assumptions. They are a cost-to-hire model, not a census of completed transactions. See Second Talent’s WordPress developer cost model.

How much does a WordPress project cost?

An hourly rate alone does not tell you the full budget: a site’s requirements determine how many hours it takes. Second Talent estimates these US project totals at its modeled mid-level rate; they are estimates, not quotes.

Project type Estimated hours Estimated project total
Template or brochure build 150–250 $9,000–$25,000
Custom theme with integrations 400–600 $25,000–$60,000
Commerce or multisite 900–1,500 $56,000–$150,000+

These totals reflect that model’s assumptions and project categories. A quote for a site with a different feature set, content workload, migration, or support arrangement is not directly comparable just because it uses the same label, such as “brochure site.”

Why do the published rates differ?

  • They describe different things. A marketplace listing range, a blended regional median, an agency-owner survey, and a hiring-cost model are not measurements of the same population.
  • Location and working arrangements matter. Regional rates vary, and a remote provider’s time-zone overlap may affect coordination. Regional price differences do not establish equivalent scope or service quality.
  • Provider type changes the price. An agency quote may include project management and a broader team; it should not be read as an individual developer’s wage.
  • Experience and specialization affect the work. A developer configuring an existing theme is taking on a different assignment from one building a custom theme, integrating systems, or implementing commerce.
  • Scope and schedule drive effort. Content entry, design, copy, SEO and analytics setup, migration, testing, revisions, launch, and documentation may or may not be included. Rush timing and out-of-scope requests can change the price.
  • Billing terms distribute risk differently. Hourly billing charges for time; a fixed fee prices an agreed scope. A fixed price is only comparable when the deliverables, revision rounds, and process for approving extra work are clear.

What does agency pricing data say about project budgets?

The Admin Bar’s State of the WordPress Agency 2026 survey received responses from 622 agency owners and freelancers across 51 countries in March 2026. Its project-pricing question had 616 responses. Among respondents who selected a $5,000–$9,999 project-price band, 56.8% said they were consistently profitable; in the $2,500–$4,999 band, 36.8% did. This is an association within respondents’ businesses—not a recommended buyer budget, a measure of what all clients paid, or proof that a higher price causes profitability. How to compare WordPress developer quotes

Before comparing totals, ask each provider to price the same written scope. A lower quote may omit work that another provider has included.

  1. Define the deliverables. List the pages, templates, features, integrations, and any design or content work expected.
  2. Specify technical work. Identify whether the job uses an existing theme or a custom theme, and whether it includes plugins, ecommerce, migration, or multisite setup.
  3. Set acceptance and revision terms. State what counts as completion, how many revision rounds are included, and how changes to the agreed scope are approved and billed.
  4. Include launch and handoff. Clarify testing, launch support, documentation, and who handles content, analytics, and SEO setup.
  5. Compare timing and ongoing obligations. Ask about milestones, working-hour overlap, rush charges, warranty, maintenance, and post-launch support.
  6. Confirm the commercial model. For hourly work, ask for an estimate and the rate for out-of-scope work. For a fixed fee, get the included scope and change-control terms in writing.

Upwork’s guidance likewise identifies experience, location, reputation, scope, rush timing, and out-of-scope work as cost factors. Its examples of project work include research, wireframing, theme customization, plugins, analytics or SEO support, testing, review, and launch. Upwork explains WordPress project pricing factors.
