WordPress.com is usually the better fit if you want hosting and many technical tasks handled for you. WordPress.org is the better fit if you want to choose your host and control more of the server environment. Neither is universally cheaper or better: the right choice depends on the features you need, the maintenance you are willing to do, and the full cost over time.

What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

Both use the WordPress software. The central distinction is hosting: WordPress.com bundles managed hosting with its service, while WordPress.org is the project home for the software that you can install with a separate hosting provider. WordPress.com’s comparison guide, last reviewed August 11, 2026, describes hosting as the main difference. Read the official comparison.

With WordPress.com, the service manages hosting operations and handles tasks such as updates. With a self-hosted WordPress.org site, you select the host and have more control over the environment, including PHP-level configuration, but also more responsibility for setup and maintenance. WordPress.com’s hosting guide explains the hosting choice.

Which option fits your priorities?

Priority Likely fit Trade-off
Less server setup and maintenance WordPress.com Hosting operations are managed, but confirm that your required features are available on the plan you choose.
Server and PHP-level control Self-hosted WordPress.org You choose the provider and configuration, and take on more setup and maintenance.
Lowest total cost Compare current plans and hosting offers There is no universal cheapest option. Compare renewal prices and included resources, security, backups, and support.
Plugins or custom themes Either, depending on plan and setup WordPress.com plugin installation is available on paid plans; self-hosting offers direct control, but compatibility and quality still matter.
E-commerce or advanced development Compare the exact requirements with plan features and hosting configuration WordPress.com tiers differ in commerce and developer features. Self-hosted capabilities depend on the host and setup.

How do plugins, themes, and features compare?

WordPress.com plan features vary. Its plan guide, last reviewed September 4, 2026, says plugin installation is available on paid plans; built-in features may also mean you do not need a plugin for every function. Check the current plan details against your must-have features before choosing. See the WordPress.com plan guide. Its plugin instructions are also plan-dependent. Check the plugin installation guide.

With self-hosting, you select the hosting provider and have more direct control over the software environment and custom configuration. That flexibility does not guarantee that every theme or plugin will work well together; you remain responsible for evaluating compatibility and upkeep.

What should you include in a cost comparison?

WordPress.org software is free, but a self-hosted site still needs hosting, and typically a domain. WordPress.com pricing depends on the plan. A domain is the site’s address; hosting stores its files and makes the site accessible. WordPress.com explains the difference between a domain and hosting.

Compare the full package, not just a headline price. Account for renewal terms as well as storage, traffic or site-visit allowances, built-in features, security, backups, and support. Third-party hosting introductory offers may differ from renewal pricing. WordPress.com notes that direct cost comparisons can be difficult and recommends weighing price against included resources and services. Review its comparison guidance.

How do backups and maintenance differ?

Backup arrangements depend on the plan and how the site is set up. WordPress.com’s backup guide, last reviewed October 5, 2026, identifies automated backups on Business and Commerce plans. For other plans, it describes exporting content and media. Read the backup guide.

For a self-hosted site, backup coverage depends on the host and the backup setup you choose. Before launch, establish how backups are made and how you would restore the site; do not assume that choosing a host automatically gives you the backup arrangement you want.

Can you move a site later?

WordPress.com says users own their site content and can move sites to or from its service. That supports portability of content, but it does not mean every theme, plugin, or configuration will transfer unchanged. Plan for some migration work if your site relies on specific tools or custom settings. See WordPress.com’s comparison and portability information.

A practical way to decide

  1. List your must-haves. Identify required plugins, themes, commerce functions, and custom development before comparing plans or hosts.
  2. Choose your maintenance level. If you want hosting operations handled for you, start with WordPress.com. If server-level control matters more and you can manage the added responsibilities, consider self-hosting.
  3. Compare complete costs. Include the plan or hosting price, renewal terms, domain, and the value of included security, backups, support, storage, and features.
  4. Verify current details. Plan availability and prices can change. Confirm the plan or host covers your requirements before committing.
