Choose a checkout customization tool only after checking whether your store uses the classic shortcode checkout or the block-based Checkout. The built-in editor handles some layout and field settings; extensions are for more specialized fields, conditional rules, and order-level options. The available product evidence supports a practical shortlist, not a verified ranking of 14 essential plugins.

How to customize the WooCommerce checkout page

Start by identifying the checkout architecture, because a field editor that works with classic checkout may not work with Checkout Blocks. WooCommerce’s Checkout Documentation says the classic customizer’s field visibility settings apply to shortcode checkout; for the Checkout Block, use the Site Editor. Its guidance says: “If you are using the Checkout Block (default for all new WooCommerce installs), you’ll see a link directing you to the site editor to make changes.”

Classic shortcode checkout

In the classic checkout customizer, company name, address line 2, and phone can each be set to optional, required, or hidden. The settings also cover the terms and privacy pages. These are native options, so check whether they meet your needs before adding an extension.

Checkout Block

To edit the block-based checkout, open Appearance > Editor and edit the checkout template. WooCommerce describes the block checkout as combining customer details, shipping or delivery, payment methods, and order review. Its documented controls include dark-mode inputs, form-step options, and visibility and requiredness settings for Company, Address Line 2, and Phone. See the Checkout Block documentation and Cart and Checkout block editing guide.

Which checkout field editor works with WooCommerce Checkout Blocks?

There is no universal compatibility answer: verify the current product documentation for your installed WooCommerce version and checkout type. WooCommerce notes that extensions declared incompatible may prompt a return to classic checkout, and integrations that insert checkout markup through hooks may need changes to support Blocks. Cart and Checkout Blocks became the default experience as of WooCommerce 8.3, released in November 2023; this does not mean every extension supports them. See WooCommerce’s Cart and Checkout Blocks status guidance.

Option Best fit Checkout compatibility evidence and caveat
Conditional Checkout Fields & Edit Checkout Fields (FMEAddons) Conditional fields, additional field types, or fields with fees The marketplace product page claims Cart and Checkout Block compatibility and describes conditional display and custom fields. WooCommerce core block checkout’s documented additional-field types include text, select, checkbox, and date; do not assume every product field type is a core block field.
Checkout Field Manager (Checkout Manager) (QuadLayers) Adding, editing, removing, and reordering billing, shipping, and additional fields The WordPress.org listing describes multiple input types and conditional fields. The cited listing does not establish Block compatibility; consult the plugin’s current documentation before using it with Blocks.
Checkout Field Editor And Manager (Acowebs) Visual form building and conditional field controls WooCommerce documentation describes a form builder, conditional controls, and block support. WordPress.org listed version 3.0.7 on 2026-09-09, with WooCommerce 11.1 and WordPress 7.1 support; recheck the current listing and your installed versions.
Cashier Checkout Field Editor Editing, removing, and rearranging billing, shipping, and additional fields Cashier documentation describes several field types, but the cited page does not establish compatibility with current Checkout Blocks.
Custom fields via developer code Bespoke registration or integration work WooCommerce documents shortcode-era hooks separately from the additional checkout fields API for Blocks. This is a developer route, not a no-code plugin.

For developer-led customization, consult WooCommerce’s checkout field customization guide. A block field uses a different developer interface from shortcode-era hooks, with defined locations and registration requirements.

How can I add conditional fields to WooCommerce checkout?

Use a field editor that explicitly documents the conditional rules you need and supports your checkout architecture. For example, a conditional field could appear only when a customer selects a relevant option, but confirm the plugin’s rule conditions and how it stores or displays submitted values in its current documentation. FMEAddons and QuadLayers list conditional fields; Acowebs documentation describes conditional controls and block support. These are publisher descriptions, not independent comparative tests.

For simpler changes, first check the native visibility and requiredness controls described above. Avoid adding a plugin just to reproduce a setting already present in WooCommerce.

When an order-level checkout add-on is the better fit

A field editor and an order add-on solve different problems. A field editor changes the checkout form; an add-on can present a service or request associated with the order, such as a tip, gift wrapping, rush handling, or a gift message, sometimes with an extra fee.

WooCommerce Checkout Add-ons

WooCommerce’s Checkout Add-ons documentation describes those order-level use cases. It also says the extension documentation had not yet been updated for Cart and Checkout Blocks and recommends the classic shortcode route. The page’s compatibility note may change, so confirm the current status before installing it on a block checkout.

What to check before installing a checkout plugin

  • Checkout type: Confirm classic shortcode or Checkout Block, then verify explicit support for that type.
  • Exact task: Separate field creation and conditional display from order options such as tips or gift wrapping.
  • Data handling: Check where submitted values appear and how they are stored or shown to staff, customers, and order integrations.
  • Version support: Compare the plugin’s current WordPress and WooCommerce requirements with your store; product listings and compatibility can change.
  • Maintenance and support: Review the publisher’s update history and support information rather than relying on a feature list alone.
  • Store-specific testing: Test the full checkout flow, including payment and order confirmation, on a staging site before deploying changes.

Do not treat claims about conversion or reduced abandonment as established outcomes unless independently measured. The cited documentation and listings do not provide a basis for a performance guarantee.
