Because the design problem was never just Google Glass: a camera worn on the face can record people who may not notice or understand what is happening, while software makes it easy to share what was captured. Today’s glasses are not identical to Glass, and the available evidence does not show that most wearers misuse them. But discreet recording, uncertain bystander consent and weak or easily misunderstood safeguards are familiar risks—and they should have been treated as design requirements, not afterthoughts.

What women warned about Google Glass

Google Glass arrived in 2013. By 2014, women were publicly raising concerns about men using it to record them covertly, including in nightclubs, according to TechRadar’s retrospective. Businesses also banned the device. Those objections were not proof that every wearer was recording people, but they exposed a mismatch: a camera could be conspicuous to its owner and difficult for nearby people to recognize or respond to.

Google ended sales of the consumer Explorer Edition in January 2015. Privacy was not the only reason the product struggled; TechRadar also points to its price, appearance and lack of compelling everyday uses. The more useful lesson is that a wearable camera’s social acceptability is part of its product design. A device can function as intended and still make people around its wearer feel watched.

What current reporting shows—and what it does not

A documented pattern, not a measure of prevalence

In an announcement dated 11 August 2026, the University of Sydney described an emerging study examining 350 publicly available Instagram videos from 2023 to 2026 associated with pickup-artist communities. Researchers reported examples of men approaching women while making discreet point-of-view recordings, then sharing footage online for attention or social proof. They identified settings including workplaces, gyms and beaches.

That sample documents examples of a harm; it does not establish how often smart-glasses wearers record people this way, or what proportion of wearers do so. The announcement also says existing online-safety and platform-governance frameworks may not recognize some of the gendered harms involved. Dr Milica Stilinovic, a postdoctoral research associate on the university’s Governing Immersive Tech team, said: “Tech is running at breakneck speed and regulators, a pace behind, cannot regulate harms once they’ve already manifested in the wild.”

One person’s experience, not a statistic

CBS News reported the case of Toluwa Omitowoju, who said she learned of a video of herself only after people she knew sent it to her. She said she had not known she was being filmed or been asked before it was posted: “I had no say.” CBS also reported that Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the platform would remove pickup-line videos that take advantage of and harass people. That is a platform statement, not evidence that moderation has resolved the problem.

Why a recording light does not settle the consent question

Meta says its glasses have a capture LED that illuminates during recording and a safeguard intended to prevent recording if the light is obstructed. In a CBS News test, covering the light after recording had begun did not appear to stop capture. Meta told CBS that the safeguard is designed to act when the light is obstructed before recording starts. The timing matters: that reported test does not show that the safeguard fails in every circumstance, and one test cannot establish behavior across every model, software version or condition.

The Guardian has also reported that indicators can be subtle, that people have modified devices to conceal them, and that Meta issued a software update intended to detect physical tampering. These reports make the indicator’s visibility and durability legitimate questions, but they do not establish that every device or update behaves the same way. A light is useful only if bystanders can notice and interpret it—and if the system reliably prevents capture when its intended signal is compromised.

Even a visible indicator cannot by itself establish that everyone nearby understands what is being recorded, where the footage will go or whether it will be shared. That is why the problem is broader than whether a light turns on: recording awareness, consent, storage and onward sharing are connected parts of the experience.

What a better design should make clear

The following are design criteria, not independently tested product scores. They follow from the reported cases and safeguard questions:

  • Make recording perceptible. An indicator should be easy to see and understand at ordinary social distances, not merely present on the frame.
  • Fail safely when the indicator is blocked. The system should prevent capture if the signal is obstructed, with clear rules about when that protection engages.
  • Make data flows legible. Wearers should be able to tell what is stored, which AI features process it, and how sharing works; bystanders should not have to guess whether a brief interaction can become a public post.
  • Match the form to its capabilities. If a device looks like ordinary eyewear while including a camera, people nearby may not recognize it as record-capable. Product design and public-facing disclosure should address that gap.
  • Offer non-camera choices for non-camera needs. A camera should not be an unavoidable part of glasses bought mainly for audio, calls or other functions.

TechRadar reported Meta’s announcement of Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses, a camera-free design that retains audio, calls, translation and AI features. That offers a useful design comparison: some smart-glasses functions do not inherently require a camera. The report does not establish the product’s current availability or price.

What California’s vetoed proposal says about the policy gap

California SB 1130 would have required covered wearable recording devices to include an indicator or similar feature beginning in 2028, and would have restricted the sale of technology designed to conceal recording indicators. Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed the bill in 2026, arguing that its definition of a wearable recording device was too broad and pointing to existing protections. The Associated Press reported that supporters viewed the measure as a way to help people recognize recording, while TechNet opposed its approach.

SB 1130 did not become law. The debate also does not create a universal rule about when recording is legal: consent and recording laws vary by jurisdiction, and the AP notes that rules differ across states. People concerned about a particular recording should check the law where it occurred rather than assume one rule applies everywhere.

Why this is the same mistake, but not the same device

Today’s camera-equipped glasses have different features and safeguards from Google Glass, and the documented incidents do not justify treating every wearer as an abuser. The repetition is in the governance failure: a low-visibility camera was made socially contentious before, yet current products still leave bystanders to infer whether recording is happening and what may happen to the footage afterward. Platform moderation can respond to posted material, but it cannot give a person advance notice or a meaningful choice at the moment of capture.

Google Glass showed that social acceptance is not a problem to solve after launch. The better standard for camera smart glasses is whether recording is unmistakable, safeguards work under realistic conditions, and people affected by capture have a meaningful way to understand and contest it. The evidence here establishes a foreseeable design risk and specific reported harms—not how prevalent misuse is across all wearers.
