An Arizona State University employee was knocked down and injured by a Starship delivery robot near a parking garage, according to reporting based on a police report. The account says the robot changed direction, struck her, then reversed toward her while she was on the ground. Starship later said it investigated the incident, but the available reporting does not establish why the robot reversed.
What happened at Arizona State University?
The collision happened in September 2023, according to 404 Media’s September 19, 2024 report, which was based on a police report obtained through a public-records request. The employee was crossing near a parking garage after waiting for a Starship delivery robot to pass. The police-report-based account says the robot abruptly changed direction and hit her, then reversed toward her again after she fell.
Futurism’s September 21, 2024 coverage adds that video obtained by police corroborated the employee’s account. Futurism quotes the responding officer as observing no vehicle or other apparent object in front of the robot when it changed direction the second time. That observation does not explain what caused the robot to reverse.
What injuries were reported?
Futurism’s account of the police report says the employee complained of lower-back pain, had a four-inch gash on her left arm, and had difficulty walking away. The accessible 404 Media report confirms that she was injured but does not list those specific injuries, so the details should be understood as reported by Futurism from the police record.

What did Starship say?
A Starship spokesperson told 404 Media: “We are aware of a situation over a year ago where a robot came into contact with a pedestrian at extremely low speed after detecting an oncoming vehicle. Safety is our number one priority, we take every incident seriously, the case was thoroughly investigated at the time.”
The company’s description differs in emphasis from the police-report-based account: Starship characterized the contact as occurring at “extremely low speed” after the robot detected an oncoming vehicle, while the reported police account describes an abrupt direction change and a second movement toward the employee after she fell. The accessible accounts do not provide a technical investigation explaining the reversal or independently resolve that difference.
