When a Windows drive is nearly full and the Storage view does not explain why, WizTree can show which files and folders are taking up the space. In one account published by XDA Developers on October 2, 2026, João Carrasqueira used it to find almost 200GB of virtual-machine and operating-system test files on his own 512GB Huawei laptop. That is one person’s result—not a typical-PC estimate.
What WizTree shows
WizTree analyzes disk usage and presents the results as a treemap: each rectangle represents a file, and larger rectangles represent larger files. The view also shows where files sit in folders and how they contribute to those folders’ total sizes. That makes it useful when you need to move from a broad “what is using space?” question to specific files and paths.
To use it, select the drive you want to inspect and start a scan. Carrasqueira said the scan took seconds on his laptop; that is his observation, not a performance guarantee for other computers or drives. WizTree’s vendor says it scans NTFS drives by reading the Master File Table (MFT) directly. WizTree’s official site describes that method and its licensing: it is free for personal use, while commercial users can purchase a Supporter Code and large organizations should purchase an Enterprise license.
What the scan found on one laptop
Carrasqueira was examining a several-year-old Huawei laptop with a 512GB drive that he used for software testing. He attributed almost 200GB of material to virtual machines and operating-system testing, including VirtualBox and VMware VM files, multiple Windows ISO images, Windows Subsystem for Linux data, and files kept both as compressed archives and in extracted form. He also reported about 30GB attributed to Windows and a 6.3GB hiberfil.sys file. These figures describe his machine and his account, not what other Windows users should expect to find. Use Windows’ overview, then inspect large files
Windows does have storage settings and cleanup features. They provide a useful category-level overview and cleanup workflow. A treemap answers a different question: which individual files are large, and where are they located? Start with Windows’ built-in view; if it does not account for the space, use a disk-usage analyzer to investigate specific paths.
- Open Windows Settings and go to System > Storage to review the drive’s storage categories.
- If the categories do not explain the usage, scan the relevant drive in WizTree and look for the largest rectangles.
- Check each candidate’s full path and purpose. A large VM disk, ISO, WSL data file, or archive may still be needed.
- Before removing anything you are unsure about, confirm you have another usable copy or backup. Delete only files you recognize and no longer need.
Why a hibernation file may be present
A large hiberfil.sys file is not automatically evidence of a problem. Microsoft documents that hibernation files can support hybrid sleep, fast startup, and standard hibernation. As Microsoft puts it, “Fast startup is a type of shutdown that uses a hibernation file to speed up the subsequent boot.” A file may therefore exist even when a user has turned off the visible Hibernate option; the XDA account does not establish why Carrasqueira’s particular 6.3GB file was present.

Microsoft lists default hibernation-file sizes of 40% of physical memory for a full file and 20% for a reduced file. To check whether the file is full, reduced, or not enabled, Microsoft documents the powercfg /a command. See Microsoft Learn’s System power states documentation.
