Wizards of the Coast workers on the Dungeons & Dragons team and Studio X have announced plans to unionize with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and are asking the company for protection against AI. Their October statement does not literally demand that Wizards “stop pushing” generative AI: it lists “Protection against the encroachment of AI.” An earlier organizing effort by MTG Arena workers specifically called for generative AI guardrails.
What the October announcement says
The United Wizards of the Coast – CWA announcement says the D&D team and Studio X informed company leadership of their intent to unionize. It asks Wizards to voluntarily recognize their unions by October 13, 2026, after which the workers say they plan to begin bargaining. These are stated intentions and requests, not evidence that the unions have been recognized or that contract terms have been reached.
The announcement page is dated October 5, 2026, while its body says, “Today, October 6, 2026.” The discrepancy is in the announcement itself; the page does not resolve which date should be treated as its publication date. Its AI demand is worded “Protection against the encroachment of AI.” United Wizards of the Coast – CWA announcement
Why generative AI is part of the story
The October demand refers broadly to AI, rather than spelling out a specific generative-AI policy or calling for a companywide halt. The generative-AI connection comes in part from the earlier MTG Arena organizing effort. In its April 2026 account, CWA said Arena workers sought guardrails for generative AI, alongside protections related to layoffs and remote work, limits on mandatory crunch, and greater transparency and equity. That earlier campaign is context, not a reason to treat the two announcements as one union or one bargaining unit. United Wizards’ about page describes D&D and Studio X as forming their own unions and planning to collaborate and align their efforts with the Arena workers. Which workers are organizing, and what else do they want?
The October announcement covers the D&D team and Studio X, whose teams include tabletop Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters. The union says workers are seeking improvements beyond AI protection:

Has Wizards of the Coast responded?
The available company statement concerns the earlier MTG Arena filing, not the October D&D and Studio X announcement. Rascal News reported that a Wizards representative said the company had received the filing and was reviewing it, adding that it was committed to fostering a workplace where employees feel heard, valued, and supported. The statement also said Wizards would respond through the appropriate process. Rascal News, April 30, 2026
