In a PC Gamer feature, Andy Chalk reports that he asked Jack Thompson about Florida’s promotional partnerships tied to Grand Theft Auto 6. The exchange ended with Thompson calling him dishonest and telling him to stop making contact. Nothing in the exchange suggests Thompson has softened his long-running criticism of the Grand Theft Auto series. As reported, it points the other way.
What the outreach was about
Chalk’s question concerned Florida’s embrace of GTA 6 marketing and promotional partnerships, as the feature describes them. Chalk reports that he passed along the response from a county sheriff’s department, which said it was not concerned by “promotional decisions [made] by private businesses or organizations.” The Florida arrangements and the sheriff’s statement are known to readers only through Chalk’s account. Neither is independently documented in the feature itself.

Thompson’s replies, in order
Government promotion and “fascism”
Thompson’s first reply, as quoted by Chalk, was: “If you don’t understand that government promotion of commercial interests is fascism then we have very little to talk about.” He then directed Chalk to “Ask the County Sheriff what she thinks about this unholy corporatist alliance.”

The “fascist Kool-Aid” remark
According to the feature, Thompson accused Chalk of drinking the “fascist Kool-Aid,” likened him to Joseph Goebbels, and told him to stop contacting him.

The honesty charge
In a later email, Thompson wrote: “The problem is your work proves you are not an honest journalist.” This is the only line in the exchange that addresses Chalk’s reporting rather than his question.

Why Thompson’s name still carries weight in GTA coverage
The feature describes Thompson as a prominent critic of violent video games in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It notes that Bill Paxton portrayed him in the BBC Two docudrama The Gamechangers.

The feature recalls the Hot Coffee episode in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, in which a modification activated abandoned code for a sexual mini-game. It reports that the game was re-rated Adults Only in 2005, and that the FTC criticized Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive for not telling consumers that the discs contained potentially viewable nude characters and a potentially playable mini-game. These are the feature’s account. Readers who need them as citations should check the FTC’s and the ESRB’s own records.

What the feature reports about GTA 6’s rating
PC Gamer reports that GTA 6 carries an ESRB rating of M (Mature 17+), with the following content descriptors:
- Blood and gore
- Intense violence
- Mature humor
- Nudity
- Strong language
- Strong sexual content
- Use of drugs and alcohol
Confirm the current rating and descriptors on the ESRB’s listing before relying on them, since they come from the feature rather than a direct check of the ESRB record.

Mainstream reach versus the old controversy
The feature’s central argument is that Grand Theft Auto has moved from being a target of public alarm to a mass-market franchise. Its one named statistic is attributed to the Entertainment Software Association’s 2025 report: the average US gamer is 36 years old and has played for 18 years. PC Gamer is the source for that attribution. The underlying ESA figures have not been checked against the report itself, so treat them as a cited number rather than a verified one.

Chalk concludes that the catastrophe Thompson anticipated did not happen and that violent crime did not rise because of games. That is the author’s interpretation. The feature does not include a crime study or any causal analysis, so it does not establish that link. It is a reading of the cultural record, and the article should be read that way.
