Three winter dinners in the available published costings come in under $11 for the full recipe batch: vegan lentil stew, black bean chili, and ham and lentil soup. Their listed costs range from $6.45 to $8.93, but they were priced or updated on different dates, so they are not a current, apples-to-apples grocery comparison. The other 22 ideas below are budget-friendly meal formats—not verified under-$11 recipes. Check your local prices before counting them toward a firm budget.

Three winter dinners with published batch costs under $11

These figures are recipe-publisher costings, not guaranteed checkout totals. A recipe batch total is different from its per-serving cost; the yield is included so you can compare both.

Dinner Yield Published batch cost Published cost per serving Costing date
Vegan lentil stew 8 servings $6.45 $0.80 Budget Bytes, updated March 2025
Black bean chili 6 servings $8.93 $1.48 Budget Bytes, updated March 2025
Ham and lentil soup 6 servings $7.76 $1.29 Budget Bytes, published April 6, 2026

The date matters: an older recipe-page total should not be read as a current local grocery quote. The figures above also come from different recipe pages and dates, rather than a single retailer’s basket priced on one day.

22 more winter dinner ideas to cost against local prices

These are practical meal concepts built around filling staples, but no batch cost is established for them here. To decide whether any one fits an $11 ceiling, price its actual ingredient quantities using a dated local or retailer basket.

  2. Slow-cooker vegetarian lentil chili
  3. Creamy lentil vegetable soup
  4. Golden coconut lentil soup
  5. Chunky lentil vegetable soup

  10. Vegetable soup with barley or another grain
  11. Baked pasta with beans
  12. Egg-and-potato hash
  13. Chicken and root-vegetable soup
  14. White bean and vegetable soup
  15. Chickpea and rice skillet
  16. Split-pea soup
  17. Rice and black bean casserole
  18. Potato and lentil curry
  19. Bean-stuffed baked potatoes
  20. Vegetable and barley stew
  21. Tomato, white bean, and pasta soup
  22. Rice, cabbage, and egg skillet

The lentil-and-sausage stew page lists $7.11 for eight servings and was updated in August 2025, but that older publisher figure is not treated here as a current cost. Tomato lentil soup has a historical Budget Bytes page costing of $4.74 for six servings (2020); it likewise needs current recosting before use as a present-day estimate.

How to check whether a batch really stays under $11

  1. Choose a dated price basis. Use one retailer or market basket in your region and record the date. A national trend is context, not your store’s price.
  2. Price the amounts the recipe uses. For each ingredient, multiply the package price by the fraction consumed. Keep package checkout cost separate from consumed-quantity recipe cost.
  3. Add every ingredient consistently. State whether oil, salt, spices, and stock are included or treated as pantry staples. Identify optional toppings separately rather than quietly folding them into some recipes but not others.
  4. Sum the whole batch, then divide by yield. Report both total batch cost and cost per serving; do not confuse a single serving with the complete recipe.
  5. Recheck substitutions and local variation. Meat, produce, package size, and store prices can change the total. If the sum exceeds $11, call it a budget idea, not an under-$11 dinner.

Why old costings need caution

USDA Economic Research Service reports that average U.S. food-at-home prices rose 2.3% in 2025 compared with 2024. Its September 2026 Food Price Outlook forecast a further 2.5% increase in 2026. These national figures describe broad price movement; they are not a recipe-specific adjustment and should not be applied as if every ingredient rose by the same amount.

USDA ERS produce estimates use retail scanner data from selected retail establishments and express prices by weight and edible cup equivalent. That method supports broad produce comparisons, but does not establish the price of your recipe at a local store. USDA Food and Nutrition Service food plans are household food-at-home budget references with household-size adjustments, not proof that a particular dinner batch falls below $11.

Which meals are easiest to adapt?

Dry lentils, beans, rice, potatoes, and grains can anchor soups, stews, skillet meals, and casseroles. Lentils are especially versatile across vegetarian and meat-containing dinners, but add-ins such as sausage or ham change the cost. For a strict cap, price the recipe with the exact protein, vegetables, and pantry items you plan to use before cooking.
