Vanilla Windrose has no usable admin-command system or server console in the documented Early Access builds. You cannot use chat commands such as /kick, /ban, teleport, item-spawn, or restart commands. Dedicated-server administration is performed through the hosting panel and JSON configuration files. Difficulty is chosen when a world is created and is locked for that save in the normal in-game workflow.
For a new world, select one of Windrose’s four presets or configure the individual sliders before creating the save. For an existing world, make a backup before attempting any file-based change; the supported player-facing solution is to create a new world. A separate community mod called Windrose+ adds RCON commands, but those commands are not vanilla features.
Does Windrose have admin commands?
No. In the Early Access state documented in 2026, Windrose does not expose an in-game administrator command system, a tilde-style developer console, or a usable dedicated-server console. PC Gamer’s Wes Fenlon reported at launch that there were “no Windrose admin commands,” while a July 2026 hosting guide likewise described the game as having no in-game commands, server console, RCON, or in-game administrator login.

If a website presents a “complete Windrose command list” without identifying a specific mod and its version, treat it as unreliable. The documented vanilla management model is configuration-file and hosting-panel administration, not live commands.
How vanilla dedicated-server administration works
A dedicated Windrose server is managed while it is stopped, using the host’s control panel and two JSON files. The files have different jobs, so editing the wrong one will not change the setting you expect.

Most commercial panels expose buttons for start, stop, restart, scheduled restarts, backups, log viewing, and file management. RespawnHost describes this model as “files and the panel, not live commands.” Settings are read when the server starts, so a change normally takes effect only after a restart. Do not edit either JSON file while the process is running; stop the server first and make a backup of the world.

Because there is no /kick or /ban command, access control is handled through the fields in ServerDescription.json. Enable password protection and set a new password when you want to restrict entry. The invite code is also an access credential. Changing it is the practical way to invalidate an old code that has been shared too widely.
These measures prevent future connections; they are not a live moderation command. If a player is already connected, use the hosting panel’s stop or restart control according to your host’s procedure, then issue a new password or invite code before bringing the server back online. Warn players first when possible, because stopping the process can interrupt unsaved activity.

How to change Windrose difficulty
The normal supported route is the Create World or Select Difficulty screen. Windrose Wiki states that settings are locked at world creation, so the in-game workflow does not provide a mid-save difficulty switch.
For a new world
- Open the world-creation flow and choose Select Difficulty.
- Pick one of the four presets: Calm Waters, High Seas, Storm’s Edge, or Captain’s Choice.
- If you choose Captain’s Choice, set the individual sliders and options described below.
- Review the settings before creating the world. Once the save is generated, the normal in-game world-settings screen treats them as locked.
The first three presets pre-fill the sliders. Windrose Wiki describes High Seas as the intended baseline. Captain’s Choice is the preset for a group that wants to alter specific pressures, such as enemy damage or ship health, without changing every category.

For a dedicated server before the world exists
If the dedicated server has not generated its world yet, configure the world description through the host panel or its file editor before the first launch. Set the desired preset or custom gameplay values in the world’s configuration, save the file, and start the server so it generates the save with those choices. Panel labels differ between providers, so use the provider’s file manager and the exact JSON structure it supplies rather than pasting settings from an unrelated game.
For an existing save
The documented in-game answer is that difficulty cannot be changed mid-save. If the group needs another preset, create a new world and select it before generation. Some hosts or community tools may offer file-level operations, but they are not the normal player-facing feature and should not be assumed to work on every Early Access version. Editing a live save without a backup can make the world unusable or produce settings that are only partly applied.
What the difficulty settings actually change
The presets are combinations of separate controls. When you compare them or build a custom setup, distinguish damage from health: increasing a multiplier in one category does not automatically increase the other.

A value of 1.0 is the documented baseline for the ordinary health, damage, and boarding multipliers; it is not a promise that every preset uses exactly 1.0. Values below 1.0 reduce the relevant multiplier, while values above 1.0 increase it. The co-op fields have their own defaults and should be left at the preset’s value unless you understand how your chosen player count is being scaled.

Combat Difficulty is the broadest combat switch. The in-game description says it defines how difficult boss encounters are and how aggressive enemies are in general. Use it when you want a global change in encounter behavior rather than only stronger hits or larger health pools.
Enemy damage and health
Enemy Damage Modifier controls how hard enemies hit you, while Enemy Health Modifier controls how much health they have. Lowering only damage makes mistakes less punishing but leaves fights the same length; lowering only health makes encounters shorter without changing the damage received per hit.
Enemy ships
Enemy Ships Damage Modifier changes damage dealt by hostile ships. Enemy Ships Health Modifier changes how much ship health must be removed. Adjusting both together is useful when a crew wants less dangerous naval combat without making every encounter trivial, whereas changing just one creates a more specific challenge.
Boarding
Boarding Difficulty Modifier applies to boarding encounters. It is independent of the ordinary enemy health and damage controls, so a custom world can keep land combat near its preset while making boarding more or less demanding.

Exploration, quests, and co-op options
Difficulty is not limited to combat multipliers. Windrose’s world settings also change how information and group progress work.
- Immersive exploration: disables map markers for points of interest. Players must navigate and discover locations without those markers.
- Shared quest progress: can automatically complete a co-op quest for players who already have that quest active when another member completes it.
- Co-op stat correction: applies enemy health and posture scaling based on the player group.
- Co-op ship correction: applies a separate scaling rule to enemy-ship health.
These options can matter more to a regular group than a single slider. For example, a crew that wants exploration friction can enable immersive exploration while keeping combat multipliers at baseline. A group that frequently adds or removes players should check the co-op correction values before blaming a sudden change in enemy durability on a difficulty preset.

Windrose+ is a community server mod that adds an RCON/web-console command layer. Its commands are not part of vanilla Windrose, and installing the mod does not turn the game’s own chat into an official administrator console.
Windrose+’s documentation says that all commands are executed through RCON. It specifically warns that ordinary console commands are not supported because hooking the process console can crash a Windrose dedicated server. You therefore need the mod installed, its authentication configured, and an RCON-capable connection to use the examples below.

Start with wp.help after confirming that the mod is loaded and authentication succeeds. The wp. prefix is a useful visual distinction: seeing it in a guide means you are reading Windrose+ documentation, not a list of built-in game commands. Mod commands can change as Early Access versions and the mod itself evolve, so verify the command syntax against the version installed on your server.

Safe procedure for editing a server configuration
Use this sequence whenever you change access or world settings through a hosting panel or file manager:
- Tell players and stop the server. Use the panel’s Stop action and wait until the process is fully offline. Do not rely on a restart button that edits files while the process is still writing.
- Create a backup. Back up the complete world/save directory, not just a single JSON file. Keep the backup outside the live save location and record when it was made.
- Open the correct file. Use
ServerDescription.jsonfor name, password protection, password, invite code, and player limit. UseWorldDescription.jsonfor world and gameplay settings. - Make the smallest change possible. Preserve valid JSON punctuation and existing keys. Do not copy a configuration from a different game or an older Windrose build.
- Save and start or restart. Follow the host’s documented restart action so the server reads the new file.
- Verify in-game and in logs. Confirm the server name and access behavior, then check that the intended world settings are active. If the server fails to start, stop it and restore the backup rather than repeatedly editing a damaged file.
For a difficulty change on an existing save, this procedure protects the data but does not make the change officially supported. The safest documented outcome remains a new world created with the desired settings.
Common problems and their fixes
“My /kick command does nothing.”
That is expected on vanilla Windrose. There is no documented chat-command parser for moderation. Remove the assumption that a hidden permission level is missing; use password and invite-code controls in ServerDescription.json, or install a compatible community administration mod if your group accepts its maintenance and version risks.
“The tilde key does not open a console.”
Vanilla Windrose does not provide a usable developer/server console in the documented Early Access build. A desktop console window shown by a hosting provider is a process log, not proof that game commands are accepted.
“I edited the JSON, but nothing changed.”
Check that the server was stopped before editing, that you changed the file belonging to the active save, and that you restarted afterward. A server can also be loading a different world directory than the one you edited. Compare the panel’s selected world with the path containing WorldDescription.json, then inspect startup logs.
“The server will not start after editing.”
Stop further edits, restore the last known-good backup, and start the server again. A missing comma, an extra quotation mark, an invalid value, or a setting copied from a different version can prevent the file from parsing. Once the server is running, make one documented change at a time.
“A command list says Windrose has RCON.”
Determine whether it is describing Windrose+ rather than the game. Vanilla has no RCON in the documented build. Windrose+ requires the mod, authenticated RCON, and its own wp. command family; ordinary process-console hooks are explicitly unsupported.

The practical rule is simple: do not search for a secret vanilla command. Configure a new world through its creation screen, manage a dedicated server through its panel and JSON files, and label every wp.* example as Windrose+ with its RCON requirements.
