If Windows Task View keeps appearing unexpectedly, check what is sending the input before changing Windows settings: a keyboard shortcut may be firing, an attached device may be triggering it, or a laptop touchpad gesture may be assigned to show open windows. Test one possibility at a time so you can identify which change matters.

First, check that the screen is Task View

Task View is the Windows screen that displays open windows and virtual desktops. If you can safely test the shortcut, press Win + Tab once and compare the screen that appears with the one you are troubleshooting. This is a comparison, not a fix: if the screens match, it helps confirm you are dealing with Task View.

Check for a keyboard or connected-device trigger

A Windows key or Tab key that is stuck, held down, or sending unintended input can make a shortcut appear to fire. Community guidance in a Microsoft Q&A discussion suggests checking shortcut triggers and temporarily disconnecting external keyboards or mice. Treat that as a diagnostic test, not a confirmed explanation for every case.

  1. Check that the Windows and Tab keys on the keyboard are not physically stuck or being held down.
  2. Disconnect external keyboards, mice, and controllers one at a time, then use the computer long enough to see whether Task View returns.
  3. If disconnecting a device stops the behavior, reconnect devices one at a time to narrow down which one is involved.
  4. If you suspect the keyboard but cannot isolate the cause, test with a spare, known-good wired USB keyboard if one is available. Use a spare before considering a purchase.

Review laptop touchpad gestures

On a laptop, a touchpad gesture is another possible trigger. Microsoft documents the gesture as: “Swipe with three fingers up on the touchpad.” Windows also lets users customize three- and four-finger touchpad actions.

  3. If an action is set to show open windows or otherwise brings up Task View, temporarily set it to Nothing or another non-Task View action, depending on the choices shown on your device.
  4. Test the computer again before changing another setting.

Gesture names and available options can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft’s guidance for touchpad gestures is available at Touch gestures for Windows.

What hiding the Task View taskbar button does—and does not do

You can remove the Task View button from the taskbar if you do not want to see that entry. This only changes the taskbar’s appearance; it does not show that the Win + Tab shortcut or touchpad gestures have been disabled. Use this option for a cleaner taskbar, not as a test of what is opening Task View. Microsoft explains the taskbar button setting in its Task View guidance.

If Task View still appears

Restarting Windows Explorer is a reversible troubleshooting step suggested in the symptom-specific community discussion, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Save your work first, then open Task Manager, select Windows Explorer in the process list, and choose Restart if that option is available. Retest with external input devices disconnected.

If the behavior continues, test with another available input device or seek support for your specific computer model and Windows build. The available guidance does not establish one universal root cause. When asking for help, include your Windows version, device model, whether the computer has a touchpad, and which keyboards, mice, or controllers are connected.
