Turning off the Windows Search service stops Windows from maintaining and using its search index. File searches can still run, but expect slower results; Outlook’s offline email search is the clearest app feature that may become unavailable. Your files are not deleted, and disabling the service does not mean every feature in File Explorer, Edge, or Outlook stops working.
What the Windows Search index does
Windows builds an index by cataloging terms and details from local files and other content. By default, it includes file names and full paths; it can also index file contents. Outlook adds locally synced email to the index by default for searching within the app. Microsoft explains that searching the index finds results faster than searching through content each time: Search indexing in Windows.
Microsoft identifies File Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Outlook as apps that use the index for particular tasks: File Explorer uses it to access and track file changes, Edge uses it for browser-history results in the address bar, and Outlook uses it for offline email search. This does not mean all functions in those apps depend on indexing.
What changes when the service is off
File searches still work, but may be slower
Turning off the service does not erase files or make them inaccessible. Without indexed results, finding files may take longer. Microsoft describes searching from This PC in File Explorer as a “slow but in-depth search.” The time and results depend on the search scope and configuration. See Microsoft’s guide to finding files and apps in Windows.

Outlook search may be unavailable
Outlook’s offline email search uses the Windows index. Microsoft warns that Outlook search features may be unavailable when the Windows Search service is not running or is not set to an optimal startup mode. The exact effect can vary by Outlook experience and account type, so this is not a guarantee that every Outlook search stops working.
Some Edge history results may be affected
Microsoft lists browser-history results in the Edge address bar as an index use. The documented impact is limited to that result type; it does not establish that all address-bar suggestions or browsing functions stop.

Copilot+ PCs have an additional indexing feature
On Copilot+ PCs, Windows also supports semantic indexing for specified document and image formats. Microsoft says semantic indexing is enabled by default and can be limited by location or file type. The documented information does not establish every consequence of disabling the whole Windows Search service across all Copilot+ PC models, so treat this as a version- and device-sensitive case.
Reduce indexing without disabling the service
If you want to reduce indexing activity or coverage, narrowing what Windows indexes is a less sweeping change than stopping the service. Windows offers Classic and Enhanced search modes: Classic indexes common user folders by default, while Enhanced covers the entire PC and can use more system resources. You can also adjust indexed locations and file types.

- Clear and Convenient: The bold, bright white and long-lasting characters make the keys on this PC or laptop keyboard easy to read and extra durable
- Exclude a location: Remove folders you do not need included in indexed results.
- Limit a file type to properties: Windows can index a file’s properties, such as its name, without indexing its full contents. You can still search by file name, but not by words inside that file.
- Choose a narrower search mode: Classic covers common user folders by default; Enhanced covers the entire PC.
Microsoft says initial indexing may take up to a couple of hours; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed completion time. Its undated rule of thumb is that the index takes less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files, though it can be larger when a PC has many very small files or computer code. Both figures are Microsoft guidance, not universal guarantees. Details on modes and settings are in Microsoft’s indexing guide.

Turning indexing off is not the only possible cause of an Outlook search problem. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that Windows Search is running and has an appropriate startup type, confirming Outlook is included among indexed locations, and checking indexing status. If needed, Microsoft also describes rebuilding the search catalog. Follow its instructions for desktop search service errors and Outlook search troubleshooting. Rebuilding is a troubleshooting measure, not a required step for everyone who turns indexing off.

Choose based on what you need to search
- If you mainly want to find files by name and can tolerate slower searches, disabling the service may be acceptable, but indexed searches will no longer be available.
- If you rely on Outlook to search locally synced email offline, keep Windows Search running and troubleshoot its configuration rather than disabling it.
- If you want to reduce indexing while keeping fast search for selected material, exclude locations or file types, or use properties-only indexing for file types where full-text search is unnecessary.
