A Windows low-space warning tells you that capacity is running short, not which files are responsible. Windows Storage settings can point to broad categories; a free disk-usage analyzer can help you inspect large folders and files. Treat the scan as a map, not permission to delete anything it highlights.
Start with Windows’ built-in storage view
Before installing or opening another utility, check what Windows can already tell you. Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups usage into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system-reserved storage. Select a category to see the available details and actions.
For a guided review, open Cleanup recommendations from the Storage page. Windows may suggest temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Review each suggestion; the category label alone does not tell you whether a particular item is expendable. See Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows.
Use a disk analyzer to find large folders and files
A disk-usage analyzer scans a selected drive or folder and presents its contents by size. Depending on the tool, you may see a ranked folder list, a file-type summary, a treemap in which larger blocks represent more space, or a combination. These views answer different questions: a folder list helps you navigate to a location, while a treemap can make a few unusually large items stand out.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Choose the drive to inspect. If Windows’ warning is about C:, scan C: rather than another drive. Select a narrower folder only when you have a reason to investigate that location.
- Allow the scan to finish. The result is an inventory of space use, not a recommendation to remove the largest item. Some files and folders may be difficult to interpret without checking their location and purpose.
- Sort or navigate by size. Start with the largest folders, then inspect their contents. A large parent folder can contain a mix of personal files, application data, and Windows components, so keep drilling down before deciding what to do.
- Record the full path and filename. This makes it easier to identify the item, find its owning app or account, and avoid confusing it with a similarly named file elsewhere.
The analyzer’s result depends on what it can access. If some locations are inaccessible or omitted, do not assume the visible items account for every byte Windows reports. Consult the tool’s own documentation for its scan behavior and access requirements.
Decide what to do with each large item
For every candidate, identify what it is and who or what uses it before taking action. A large personal video may be a good candidate to move to another location; an application folder or Windows component may be needed for programs or system recovery.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Keep it if you cannot establish its purpose, if an app depends on it, or if you may need it later.
- Move it if it is your own data and you have a suitable destination. Confirm the copy opens from the new location before removing the original.
- Uninstall an app through Windows’ installed-app controls rather than deleting its program folder manually.
- Use Windows cleanup options for temporary files and other suggested items, reviewing what Windows says will be removed first.
Be especially careful with a previous Windows installation: Microsoft notes that removing it can eliminate the option to roll back to the previous version. Read Microsoft’s guidance on freeing up drive space in Windows before choosing that cleanup option.

Automate routine cleanup with Storage Sense
Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents according to its settings. Open Settings > System > Storage and select Storage Sense to review or change those settings. It operates on the system drive, usually C:. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you configure Storage Sense to handle them; other drives have separate storage settings. Check Microsoft’s Storage Sense instructions before enabling automatic removal.

Leave room for Windows updates without guessing
Update space requirements vary with the update path, optional features, and device configuration. Microsoft’s published typical estimates are 6–11 GB or more for feature updates and 2–3 GB or more for quality updates; these are estimates, not universal free-space targets. Check Microsoft’s current space guidance for Windows updates if an update is what triggered the warning. Microsoft also documents external storage as a possible aid in some update scenarios.
