A cleaner Windows desktop comes from five built-in controls: a trimmed taskbar, Snap layouts for open windows, virtual desktops for separate work contexts, a short list of deliberate desktop shortcuts, and an optional Widgets board on Windows 11. None of them requires third-party software. The steps below are labeled by Windows version because menu paths and available features differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Clean up the taskbar
The taskbar is the fastest place to remove clutter, because every pinned app and tray icon competes for attention. On Windows 11, you can pin and reorder apps, choose which items and tray icons appear, and set the alignment. The taskbar stays at the bottom of the screen; Microsoft’s taskbar guidance states that Windows 11 settings cannot move it to the top or sides.
- Remove apps you do not open daily. Right-click the app’s taskbar icon and choose Unpin from taskbar. Pin only the few apps you launch every day.
- Choose which items appear. On Windows 11, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar items and switch off items you do not need, such as Widgets or Task View.
- Adjust tray icons. Under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Other system tray icons, turn off icons that only exist to notify you of things you already track.
- Set alignment and hiding. Under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors, choose Center or Left for Taskbar alignment, and turn on Automatically hide the taskbar if you want the full screen height for windows.
Hidden taskbar items remain reachable. If you hide a feature, you can still open it from its keyboard shortcut or from the Start menu.

Arrange windows with Snap
Snap places open windows into fixed regions of the screen, so you do not have to drag and resize each one by hand. On Windows 11, hover the pointer over a window’s maximize button, or press Win+Z, to open the Snap layouts flyout. Pick a layout, then click a zone to place the window there. If other windows are open, Snap Assist shows thumbnails you can click to fill the remaining zones.
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
Two points affect what you see:
- Layouts depend on display size. A small laptop screen offers fewer useful zones than a wide external monitor, so the same layout may not appear everywhere.
- Snap behavior is configurable. Go to Settings > System > Multitasking to control whether windows snap when dragged to an edge, whether Snap Assist appears, and related options.
On both Windows 11 and Windows 10, Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow move the active window to the left or right half of the screen, which is the simplest way to compare two documents side by side.
Separate work with virtual desktops
A virtual desktop is a separate set of open windows. It is useful when you want one set of apps for a project and another for personal tasks, and you want to switch between them without minimizing everything. Virtual desktops are a way of organizing your work; Microsoft does not present them as a productivity guarantee.

- Create a desktop. Press Win+Ctrl+D. A new, empty desktop is added to the end of the list.
- Move between desktops. Press Win+Ctrl+Left Arrow or Win+Ctrl+Right Arrow.
- Review all desktops. Press Win+Tab to open Task View, which shows your desktops and the windows on each one. You can also drag a window onto a different desktop thumbnail there.
- Close a desktop. Press Win+Ctrl+F4 to close the active desktop. Its open windows move to a neighboring desktop rather than closing, so check Task View before closing a desktop you have just filled.
Make desktop shortcuts deliberate
A shortcut is a link that opens an app, file, folder or web page from the desktop. It does not move or copy the original item, so deleting a shortcut is safe. Keep only the items you use often enough that one click from the desktop beats opening Start or File Explorer; the choice is about convenience, not performance.

- Create a shortcut for a file or folder. Right-click the file or folder, choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut). On Windows 11, you may first need to select Show more options.
- Control desktop icons. On Windows 11, use Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings to choose which default icons appear. On both versions, right-click the desktop and choose View > Show desktop icons to hide every icon at once, which gives a clean background without deleting anything.
Use Widgets only if they help
The Widgets board is a Windows 11 feature that shows cards from supported apps and services, such as weather, news, calendar items and photos, which you can add, remove, rearrange, resize and customize. It is entirely optional. Widgets do not organize windows or icons, so you do not need them to tidy the desktop.

Version differences and support status
Most of these tips apply to both Windows 11 and Windows 10, but the menu labels and some controls differ. Use the table to check which steps apply to your system.

| Virtual desktops | Win+Ctrl+D, Win+Ctrl+Left/Right, Win+Ctrl+F4, Win+Tab | Same shortcuts |
| Desktop shortcuts and icons | New > Shortcut, Send to > Desktop, Desktop icon settings | New > Shortcut, Send to > Desktop, View > Show desktop icons |
| Widgets board | Win+W and Taskbar items | Not applicable; the Widgets board is a Windows 11 feature |
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. The Windows 10 steps above remain accurate for organizing a desktop, but a Windows 10 PC should be upgraded or secured through other means, not treated as currently supported.
