To find an app making sound, check the controls for your device while the sound is active: Windows has a per-app Volume mixer, and a Mac’s menu-bar privacy indicator can identify an app currently using system audio. On iPhone, iPad, and Android, song-recognition tools can name music, but they do not generally identify which app produced it.
Start by identifying the kind of sound
A continuous song or video, a brief notification, and a call or communications sound may appear in different controls. When possible, check while the sound is happening: an app that has stopped playing may no longer be visible in media controls. A reversible pause or mute is the most useful confirmation—if the sound stops, you have likely found its source.
Find the source on Windows
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer, following Microsoft’s Windows sound guidance.
- Look for the suspected app and check its volume slider and mute state, as well as the system volume.
- Temporarily mute a plausible app. If the sound stops, you have confirmed a likely source; restore the control if it does not.
Windows 10
Microsoft documents another route: right-click the taskbar volume icon and choose Open Volume mixer. Check the app and system sliders and mute states, then test a suspected app with a temporary mute.
A mixer entry is not guaranteed to have an obvious name or to make the active source clear in every Windows build, app, or audio-driver setup. If no clear match appears, close recently used media apps or browser tabs one at a time, checking after each change. That is a practical isolation method, not a built-in diagnostic.

If an app is silent instead
If system sounds work but one app does not, check its volume and assigned output device in Volume Mixer. Microsoft also identifies audio services and drivers as possible causes. Follow Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting steps if adjusting the app controls does not help.
Check audio and media controls on a Mac
Click Control Center in the menu bar and look at Now Playing. Apple says this control can manage media playback from apps, including pausing, skipping, or scrubbing. The separate Sound control changes overall volume and the output device; it is not a per-app mixer.

- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
If you need to know which app is accessing system audio, check the menu-bar privacy indicator. Apple says it can show the app currently using the microphone, camera, or system audio. It is a clue to current access, not a complete list of apps that might produce notification sounds. See Apple’s Control Center guide.

Check media on iPhone and iPad
Use the device’s media controls to manage ongoing playback. If the sound is music and you want its title, add Recognize Music to Control Center and tap it. Apple says the result appears in a notification and can be reviewed in recognition history; Shazam can also identify music playing in another app. These features identify a track, not the app that produced arbitrary audio. See Apple’s guide to identifying songs.

Check music on Android
On Pixel phones, Google’s Now Playing can identify music playing nearby. Google also documents a separate Now Playing app, which may take up to 24 hours after installation to become available. Apple’s Shazam guide supports identifying music on Android as well. Neither is a general-purpose way to trace notifications, alerts, or other app sounds.
There is no universal Android source-identification path established across manufacturers and software versions. If your phone’s media controls do not help, consult the manufacturer’s current instructions for its sound or media settings. For Pixel details, see Google Pixel Phone Help.

Use a simple isolation check if the source is unclear
- Note whether the sound is continuous media, a short alert, or a call or communications sound.
- While it is playing, open the platform’s relevant media or audio controls.
- Pause or mute one plausible app briefly. If the sound stops, check that app’s settings for background playback, notification sounds, or autoplay; the exact controls vary by app.
- If no control identifies it, close recently used media apps and browser tabs one at a time, checking after each change.
- If the problem is missing or misrouted audio rather than unexpected sound, check app volume and per-app output selection on Windows, then use the platform’s audio troubleshooting guidance.
What these controls can—and cannot—tell you
| Control | What it helps answer | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Volume mixer | Which listed app has its own volume or mute control; lets you test a suspected source. | An entry may not be obvious, and active-source visibility can vary. |
| Mac Now Playing | Whether media playback can be controlled from Control Center. | It is a media control, not a full inventory of every sound-producing app. |
| Mac privacy indicator | Which app is currently using system audio, when indicated. | It is not a comprehensive notification-sound history. |
| Shazam or Pixel Now Playing | What recognizable music is playing. | Song recognition does not identify the app producing arbitrary sound. |
