“Error while trying to get backup” is not specific enough to identify the backup app or diagnose the failure. First note which application shows it, the exact error details, your Windows version, and whether the failure occurs while creating a backup or restoring one. Then check for evidence of a Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) servicing problem; if that evidence is absent, investigate the backup app’s logs and whether its source disks and backup files are still available.
Start by identifying the backup failure
The phrase “Error while trying to get backup” appeared in a September 2026 Windows 11 Forum discussion, but the replies raised several possibilities rather than establishing one cause. A missing or changed source disk or partition, an unavailable backup file, or an inconsistent backup set could matter. A possible WinRE servicing failure came up later in the discussion, but it is only a lead—not a diagnosis for every PC or backup program.

Check whether WinRE servicing is involved
A Windows recovery-environment update issue is more plausible when Windows records the specific servicing failure Microsoft describes. Open Event Viewer and inspect the System log for Event ID 4502. For the case covered by Microsoft’s guidance, the event details include “Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed” and an ErrorPhase value of 2. Finding those indicators supports investigating WinRE; it does not by itself prove that WinRE caused a failure in a separate backup application.
Check WinRE status and location
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
reagentc /info. - Review the reported Windows RE status and location to see whether WinRE is enabled and where it resides.
Microsoft describes the Event ID 4502 indicator and a manual partition-resizing procedure in KB5028997.

Apply the 250 MB requirement only to the update it covers
Microsoft’s KB5120221 guidance for the Windows Recovery Environment update for Windows 10 versions 21H2 and 22H2, published July 16, 2026, says the update requires 250 MB of free space in the recovery partition. That is a requirement for this specified update guidance, not a universal free-space rule for every Windows release, recovery partition, or backup program. See Microsoft’s KB5120221 page.
Do not resize a partition based on the error phrase alone
Microsoft’s manual procedure depends on the partition layout: the cited instructions require the recovery partition to follow the OS partition. Confirm that the device matches the procedure’s assumptions and follow Microsoft’s applicable steps carefully. Do not delete or resize a partition as a generic fix for a backup error.

If the WinRE indicators do not match
When the Event Viewer details and WinRE status do not point to the described servicing issue, focus on the backup application and the files or disks it relies on. Check the application’s own logs for the operation that failed, and verify that the original full backup and any required incremental backups are present. Also confirm that the source disk or partition is connected and that a changed drive letter or disk assignment has not made a previously configured location unavailable.
These are troubleshooting avenues raised in the forum discussion, not confirmed causes for every backup product. A failed WinRE update and a failed third-party backup operation are distinct problems unless the machine’s logs connect them.
