There was no retail Microsoft Windows 93 or Windows 96—but both names have stories behind them. Windows 93 is a fictional browser parody; “Windows 96” was a nickname associated with Microsoft’s cancelled Nashville project, and Windows96.net is a separate, modern fan-made desktop you can explore in a browser.

The short answer: three different things

Name What it refers to Official Microsoft release?
Windows 93 A fictional, browser-based parody project No
“Windows 96” / Nashville A cancelled Microsoft project associated with that informal name No retail release
Windows96.net An independent browser-based recreation of a classic Windows-style desktop No

The distinction matters: a real website or development project is not the same thing as a released Microsoft version of Windows.

Windows 93 is a real web project, not a Microsoft version

Windows 93 is an interactive parody that borrows the look and conventions of classic Windows for humorous, surreal effect. It is not an official Microsoft operating system, a leaked build, or a missing release in the company’s product line. You can visit the project at windows93.net.

Microsoft released Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows 98; there was no mainstream retail Windows 93 between them. Microsoft codenames and public product names have not always matched, but that naming complexity is not evidence that a secret Windows 93 shipped or was completed as a consumer product. “Windows 96” was associated with the cancelled Nashville project

In the mid-1990s, Microsoft worked on a project called Nashville, which was associated in contemporary coverage and enthusiast discussion with the label “Windows 96.” It was planned as an interim step after Windows 95, with greater Windows–Internet Explorer integration and web-oriented features. Nashville was cancelled rather than released as a standalone retail Windows edition; Windows 98 followed Windows 95 in 1998.

So “Windows 96 existed” is an imprecise shorthand. Microsoft did work on Nashville, but “Windows 96” was not the final official name of a generally released product. Accounts of Windows Nashville and the development of Windows 95 provide the historical context.

Windows96.net is a separate, modern browser project

Windows96.net is an independent homage and parody: a desktop-like environment built to run in a web browser, not an operating system you install in place of Windows. Its interface evokes the Windows 9x era, while fictional branding such as “MIKESOFT” signals that it is not Microsoft software. The project says it is unaffiliated with Microsoft; see its project page.

The live site labels its environment “MIKESOFT Windows 96” and displays a project-specific kernel version, currently shown as 3.2.3. That is an internal label for this web project, not a Microsoft Windows version number. The site relies on browser features including JavaScript and browser storage, and its boot screen indicates that storage access can affect whether data persists. Current features and labels can change; the Wiki96 home page notes that its community-maintained documentation is subject to updates.

How to try the browser desktop

  1. Open a current browser and go to windows96.net.
  2. Allow JavaScript and browser storage if your settings or a prompt asks for them. The project uses browser capabilities such as IndexedDB, LocalStorage, WebAssembly, and WebGL.
  3. Wait for the desktop to load, then explore its imitation Start menu, file environment, applications, utilities, and games.
  4. Treat it as an experiment, not a work computer. Its apps and compatibility depend on the project and your browser; it is not a substitute for supported Windows.

The project’s programs listing describes a varied collection of applications, system tools, games, and emulation-related features. The Wiki96 documentation also describes Windows 96 v3 features such as a file explorer, terminal, task manager, theming, and BoxedWine; these are project features, not specifications for a Microsoft product. See Windows 96 v3.

What it can—and cannot—do

What it is good for

  • Exploring a playful approximation of a 1990s desktop without setting up an old PC.
  • Trying the included web-based applications and games, and seeing how a desktop metaphor can be recreated with browser technologies.
  • Enjoying the visual style and absurdist humor as a nostalgia toy or web experiment.

What it is not

  • Not Windows 95 or Windows 98. A browser-based emulator, port, or compatibility layer does not make the whole project an original Microsoft installation.
  • Not a reliable way to run arbitrary Windows software. Compatibility depends on the specific app, implementation, browser, and device. PC Gamer’s coverage highlighted retro software such as Doom, but that is not a promise that every old program will work; see its coverage of Windows 96.
  • Not dependable file storage. Browser data can be unavailable or removed, and the site itself warns that storage affects persistence.
  • Not a secure, supported operating system for daily work. It is not a replacement for a current Windows release or a platform for sensitive tasks.

For technical compatibility details, consult the project’s developer notes; they do not turn the browser environment into a licensed copy of an older Windows release. Running an old operating-system image or commercial game through an emulator also does not settle the separate licensing question.

Safety, privacy, and troubleshooting

There is no basis here for labeling the official project malicious, but a playful interface is not a security guarantee. Visit the official domain, keep your browser updated, and do not enter passwords, payment details, or personal information into parody applications. Treat downloads, third-party links, ROMs, abandonware, and executable files as separate security and legal decisions. If you experiment with unknown downloads, use an isolated virtual machine or disposable environment.

  • Blank page or failed boot: check that JavaScript is enabled, browser storage is available, and an extension is not blocking the site; try a different current browser if needed.
  • Files or settings disappear: do not rely on the web desktop for long-term storage. Browser storage availability and retention are outside the project’s control.
  • An app is broken or slow: individual apps may be experimental or browser-dependent; WebAssembly, WebGL, and emulation can behave differently across devices.
  • On a phone or tablet: a desktop interface may be awkward to operate with touch, even if the page loads.

The live site currently displays Alt+I for recovery mode and Alt+O for an installer or first-run experience, depending on project state. These are project controls, not Windows keyboard features, and may change.

Why the “missing Windows” joke works

Windows 93 sounds like a plausible lost step before Windows 95, while Windows 96 sounds like the obvious follow-up before Windows 98. One name belongs to a fictional web parody; the other connects a cancelled Microsoft project with a later fan recreation. The browser project then plays on familiar chunky controls, bitmap icons, gray dialogs, desktop clutter, and system messages—turning recognizable computer history into internet humor. It offers the feeling of exploring an imaginary retro desktop without claiming to be the real thing.
