Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 PCs can still run, but neither operating system currently receives Microsoft security updates or technical support. Windows 7’s limited Extended Security Updates (ESU) program also ended in January 2023. If you still use one of these PCs, plan to move to a supported Windows version or a replacement computer, and back up your files before making changes.
What does “end of support” mean for your PC?
End of support does not switch off your computer. It means Microsoft has stopped providing the operating system’s feature and security updates and technical support. The PC may continue to work, but without current operating-system security fixes it faces greater risk from malware. Installing antivirus software or a cleanup utility does not restore Microsoft updates or put Windows back into support.
When did Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 support end?

Microsoft’s Windows 7 lifecycle page lists the ESU year-end dates as January 13, 2021, January 12, 2022, and January 11, 2023. Its unsupported Windows guidance gives January 10, 2023 as Windows 8.1’s end-of-support date.
Is Windows 7 still getting security updates?
No. Windows 7’s ESU window has ended. ESU was a narrow extension, not a return to normal support: Microsoft provided critical and important security updates, as defined by its Security Response Center, for a maximum of three years after regular support ended. It did not provide feature development or ordinary technical support.

Who could receive Windows 7 ESU?
ESU was available through specific volume licensing programs for Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Professional for Embedded Systems. It was not a blanket extension for every Windows 7 edition or every home user. Microsoft’s Windows 7 ESU FAQ explains the limited security-update scope and duration.
Can you keep using an old Windows PC?
Technically, yes: an unsupported PC can continue to turn on and run compatible software. But the absence of operating-system security fixes means it is a riskier choice for everyday internet use, sensitive accounts, or important files. Continuing to use it is a trade-off, not a way to extend Microsoft support.

Microsoft recommends moving to a supported Windows release. Its Windows 8.1 guidance describes a new PC capable of running Windows 11 as the best option. Check the specific device’s compatibility rather than assuming an older computer can run a current release. Microsoft’s current support guidance says there are not currently free upgrade paths from unsupported Windows versions to Windows 10 or Windows 11; availability can change, so check the page when planning a move.

- Identify the current Windows edition and device. Confirm whether the PC runs Windows 7 or 8.1 and note its model and hardware before choosing an upgrade or replacement.
- Check compatibility with a supported Windows release. Use Microsoft’s current requirements and device guidance; if the hardware cannot run a supported version, consider a replacement Windows 11-capable PC.
- Back up important files before changing systems. Microsoft’s consumer guidance recommends OneDrive; an external drive is another possible local backup destination, but neither backup method supplies operating-system security updates.
- Move files and accounts to the supported PC or system. Verify that important documents are accessible from the backup before retiring, recycling, or repurposing the old machine.
