Important: Build 2208.40000.4.0 was released on September 17, 2022. Microsoft ended support for Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) and the Amazon Appstore on March 5, 2025. It is therefore an obsolete, unsupported build—not a current Microsoft Store download in 2026.
At release, contemporary coverage identified Android 12.1 (often called Android 12L), faster app startup, smoother scrolling and several reliability, graphics, networking and input improvements. Those were release claims, not independently measured gains for every app or PC.
What WSA build 2208.40000.4.0 was
Windows Subsystem for Android was Microsoft’s virtualization and compatibility layer for running Android applications in Windows 11. Build 2208.40000.4.0 arrived in September 2022 through the WSA/Amazon Appstore ecosystem, with availability dependent on Windows channel, hardware, architecture and region. Contemporary reporting described it as an Android 12.1 update, commonly referred to as Android 12L. The September 2022 release coverage lists the build and its changes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Android 12L was optimized for larger screens, but WSA was not a Google-certified Android device. The official Amazon Appstore configuration did not include Google Play Store or Google Play Services. Apps dependent on Google authentication, Maps APIs, push services or Play Integrity could therefore fail or offer reduced functionality.

What changed in the 2022 release
The contemporary release description reported these improvements:
- Improved Android-app startup performance and smoother scrolling.
- Reliability work for App Not Responding errors.
- Input-compatibility-shim improvements.
- Usability refinements in WSA Settings.
- Networking and general graphics improvements.
- Better gamepad behavior when multiple Android apps were open.
- Improved app-uninstall behavior and a video-playback fix.
- A more usable game-controls dialog.
- Chromium WebView updated to version 104.
- Linux-kernel security updates.
- A fix for crashes caused by copying and pasting extremely large amounts of data.
How much faster were Android apps?
No independent benchmark in the available material supplies app-by-app load times, frame rates, hardware details, control builds or statistical results. “Greatly improves” is therefore an editorial description of the reported release changes, not a verified percentage increase that applies to every application. Treat startup and smoothness improvements as claims from the contemporary release coverage rather than a universal performance guarantee.
Archival installation method
The following preserves the procedure used by historical guides. It is not a current Microsoft-supported installation path. Do not disable Windows security, install modified or rooted bundles, or treat a third-party mirror as an official source. A filename alone does not prove that a package is genuine; verify publisher, digital signature, hash and provenance before opening it, and use an isolated test machine for any archival experiment.

Launch WSA from Start if deployment succeeds. Current Windows updates may reject, remove or disrupt this obsolete subsystem, and an old package may no longer be obtainable from a trustworthy source.
Why this is not a current download
Microsoft’s stated end-of-support date for WSA and the Amazon Appstore was March 5, 2025. Microsoft Q&A information also notes that the normal Microsoft Store route was no longer available after that date: support information on the end date and Store-availability information. In 2026, do not present a mirror, link generator, Telegram file or modified package as an official Microsoft download, and do not promise that sideloading will work on a current Windows release.
Supported alternatives in 2026
| Option | Best for | What it does not provide | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|
| BlueStacks | General Android apps and games for consumers | Less Windows integration than WSA; advertising, accounts, virtualization overhead and game-compatibility trade-offs may apply | bluestacks.com |
| Google Play Games for PC | Supported Android games using Google’s ecosystem | Not a general Android runtime or broad APK-sideloading replacement | play.google.com/googleplaygames |
| Android Studio Emulator | Developers, QA and controlled device testing | Resource-heavy and excessive for casual app launching | developer.android.com/studio/run/emulator |
| Phone Link | Accessing or mirroring supported phone apps from a paired Android phone | Does not run Android apps locally or install APKs on Windows | microsoft.com/windows/sync-across-your-devices |
| Native Windows apps or PWAs | Services that offer a Windows client or web application | Unavailable when the desired service exists only on Android | Use the individual vendor’s official site |
Common archival-installation failures
“The package cannot be installed”
- Missing UI XAML or another dependency.
- Wrong CPU architecture.
- Unsupported Windows build, corrupt download or invalid signature.
- Existing WSA registration conflict.
Confirm architecture and dependencies, inspect Installed apps for a legitimate existing WSA registration, and verify the package signature and source. Do not bypass the error by disabling security; stop if provenance cannot be established.

WSA installs but apps do not launch
Check that Virtual Machine Platform and firmware virtualization remain enabled. Apps may require Google Play Services, newer Android APIs, current WebView components or may block virtualized environments. Later Windows updates can also disrupt an obsolete installation.
Google Play Store is missing
That is expected in Microsoft’s original Amazon Appstore/WSA arrangement. Play Store and Play Services were not included. Unofficial Google Play modifications are separate, unsupported projects with their own security and maintenance risks.
